Why are we studying this?
In this unit students build on a their work on expressions, equations, and inequalities in middle school, with a greater emphasis on reasoning and modeling. They move from linear equations in one variable to linear equations in two variables to systems of two linear equations in two variables. They start to use variables in a more flexible way, considering situations where some of the variables in an expression or equation represent quantities that can be fixed to represent different scenarios in the situation being considered, whereas other variables represent quantities of interest that we want to solve for. They develop algebraic methods for solving equations and systems, and reason about why those methods work. The unit concludes with a sequence of lessons on inequalities, both in one and two variables.
