Bio-analytical & Microfluidics                                   Research Group @NMT

Dr. Menake Piyasena

ChairAssociate Professor Department of Chemistry

Our research focuses on developing new analytical and bio-analytical methods for environmental, biological, and chemical applications. These include early diagnosis of diseases, concentration and isolation of biological targets like viruses and bacteria, and extraction of environmental pollutants like microplastics in aqueous media.

The ongoing projects explore the development of microsphere and microfluidic based bio-assemblies as substrates for enzyme binding and inhibition reactions. We specifically utilize enzymes emerging as new disease biomarkers. Our goal is to develop sensitive and selective new diagnostic tools for cardiovascular disease.

Our research group also explores developing acoustic focusing based microfluidic systems to isolate and detect micro and nano-sized particles in biological fluids and organic and inorganic contaminants in water.
