Chorus is a performance-based class, and students will receive grades based on their performance. Whether that performance takes place in small groups, daily rehearsals, or large concert rehearsals, students are expected to give their personal best each and every day. I am not asking for perfection, just a willingness to try!
For the 2026/2027 school year, Grading will be split into 2 main sections:
Rehearsal Participation – 50%
Each student will receive a weekly grade out of 5 points based on their attendance, preparedness, attitude, cooperation, attentiveness, and overall active participation. Students are expected to:
Come to class everyday with an open mind and positive attitude
Be on time and prompt for each rehearsal and in their assigned spot with their chorus folder, music, pencil, and water
Practice correct vocal technique in all singing, with proper posture and thoughtful listening.
Be enthusiastic and a positive contribution to the chorus.
Give 100% effort in all activities in class!
If you are having trouble, try your best and talk to me about what I can do to help! I cannot help you if I don’t know you’re struggling.
Points will be taken away if a student fails to demonstrate the above.
Performances – 50%
There are various opportunities throughout the year for our chorus to perform for an audience, including the winter and spring concerts. Students are expected be present at each concert. We all depend on each other to perform and exhibit our final musical product. A Concert is a test in which students are able to demonstrate what they have learned in Chorus. If students are unable to attend the performances, please let me know ahead of time!!
Unexcused Absences:
An unexcused absence from a performance will result in a zero (no points) being given for that performance. The student will be given an alternative assignment worth 75% of the original grade to fulfill the performance requirement. Students who do not provide notification of absence well in advance will automatically receive an unexcused absence.
Excused Absences:
Under rare circumstances, a student may receive an excused absence from the performance (this includes: illness, family emergency, injuries, etc.) . The student will be given an alternative assignment to fulfill the performance requirement. Students who do not complete the assignment will lose points for that performance.
MORE ON GRADING…
Our NMS Choirs meets once a week on either Tuesday (5th grade) or Thursday (6-8th). If students choose to perform in Mr. Lanctot’s band as well, students will alternate rehearsals each week, meeting with me bimonthly. Select chorus meets Wednesday mornings before school once a week from 7:15 am until the start of the school day.
It is expected that all students show up to rehearsal! Missing work in other classes is not an excuse to miss rehearsal, and will affect your grade. Our rehearsal time before concerts is extremely limited, and each rehearsal is necessary!
I am not expecting perfection! I understand singing can be a vulnerable experience. All I ask is that you show up, try your best, and work as a team to make a beautiful sound.
