The 78th United Nations General Assembly took place in New York from September 19th to 26th, 2023. On September 22nd, 2023, Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu took the stage. Netanyahu started off by referencing a biblical story he says “Over three Millennia ago our great leader Moses addressed the people of Israel as they were about to enter the Promised Land. He said they would find there two mountains facing one another
Mount Gerizim the sight on which a great blessing would be proclaimed and Mount Ebal
the site of a great curse Moses said that the people's fate would be determined by the choice they made.” He said this because he believes that Israel is facing a similar choice now. Netanyahu mentioned the threat from Iran, which he believes has caused Israel and Arab states to become closer, potentially leading to a broader peace.
He then goes on to say that he believes making peace with more Arab states would increase the chance of making peace between Israel and Palestinians, emphasizing that Palestinians only make up 2% of the Arab world. He then argues that if Israel can make peace with 90% of the Arab States. Palestine would then follow the other states and “abandon the fantasy of destroying Israel”. Netanyahu then points out that in 2020 under the approach he advocated, Israel made peace with four Arab countries by establishing the Abraham Accords. He then goes on to mention plans announced at the G20 Summit to connect India and Europe via Israel, which could enhance peace and prosperity in the Middle East.
He then goes on to recall Israel's history of being surrounded by hostile Arab nations, symbolized by a map he shows, depicting Israel in 1948. Netanyahu noted that recent changes, including new relationships and peace treaties with several Arab states, have fostered better relations and the potential for regional peace. He continues by saying these developments signify a monumental shift, tearing down the walls of enmity and offering the prospect of prosperity and peace for the entire region.
