A mega project is a large-scale, complex, and expensive project that takes many years to complete and can impact millions. The word "mega" comes from the Greek word megas, which means "great, large, tall, and mighty". Megaprojects differ from traditional projects in terms of their objectives, complexity, and stakeholder involvement. They often involve multiple public and private stakeholders and can transform an area economically or geographically.
NEOM is building THE LINE, a 170km long vertical city in Tabuk Province, Saudi Arabia, aiming to support Vision 2030's diversification goals. The project is expected to create 380,000 jobs, contribute $48 billion to the domestic GDP by 2030, and preserve 95 percent of nature within NEOM, with zero cars, streets, and carbon emissions. It will be designed around people rather than roads, with walkability and essential services within a five-minute walk. The city will feature ultra-high-speed transit, autonomous mobility, and be powered by 100 percent clean energy, creating healthier and more sustainable environments for residents. [1]
King Abdullah City for Atomic & Renewable Energy (KA-CARE) is planning to undertake the construction of 16 nuclear reactors with a total capacity of 17 GW in Saudi Arabia. Upon completion of the project, the reactors would cover about 20 percent of the Kingdom's need for electricity. [2]
Trojena is a new mountain tourism destination announced by Mohammed bin Salman, the Crown Prince and Chairman of the NEOM Company Board of Directors. It is part of the NEOM mega-development and is expected to be completed by 2026. The project will include a ski village, luxury resorts, retail stores, and restaurants, as well as various cultural and sporting events. It aims to attract 700,000 visitors and 7,000 permanent residents by 2030 while creating over 10,000 jobs and contributing SAR3 billion to the kingdom’s GDP. All construction activities will prioritize environmental sustainability. Trojena will be located 50 kilometers from the coast of the Gulf of Aqaba and will consist of six districts, emphasizing ecotourism principles and aligning with the goals of Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.
