While we will be observing Painted Lady butterflies, Monarch butterflies are special here in Texas! Every year, the Monarch butterflies migrate through Texas to Mexico (their winter home) and then back through Texas to head North. They are the only butterflies known to migrate !
On Saturday, April 11, we received five (5) painted lady caterpillars. We will observe them each day using the "I Notice, I Wonder, It Reminds Me Of..." routine.
The caterpillar was smaller than I thought! It was less than 2 centimetres.
Watch this video to see more about caterpillar movement!
What do you notice about the caterpillar under a microscope?
I wonder how they got so big?!
How are the caterpillars similar or different from last week's observation?
How might you explain this??
I am curious and hope you are too!
Watch the video and discuss how the caterpillars are similar or different than they have been in the past few days.

We noticed an observation with a different sensory use today!
What sense do you wonder we used?
We noticed this morning we had two butterflies emerge from their chrysalises.
It was a surprise for us! How would you react to discovering a newly emerged butterfly?
Open the video in full screen to see a butterfly's special mouth part, the proboscis, moving.
How do they use this to eat?
We wonder why this butterfly is fluttering around the habitat? How would you like explain why?
Describe the life cycle of a Painted Lady Butterfly. Because we noticed the next part of the life cycle! (Last week our Painted Lady butterflies emerged as adult butterflies from their chrysalises).
What is the next part of the life cycle?
What surprises you about this stage of the life cycle?
How might you determine how long this caterpillar is?
What tools and resources would help you?
