NISD’s K-5 Literacy Beliefs:
Northwest ISD empowers learners and leaders to positively impact the world.
Kids need:
teachers and learning environments that cultivate joy and develop their confidence as readers and writers.
a balance of self-selected and provided texts to read for a purpose that are interesting, within reach, and support personalized learning goals.
direct, explicit instruction in phonics and foundational skills in order to become proficient readers and writers.
opportunities to write about topics they care about for an authentic audience that showcase their voice and personality.
structures that promote collaboration, conversation, and partnership opportunities.
In NISD, we use the workshop model for instruction in ELA. Students are taught lessons in a quick 10 minute mini-lesson that is followed by a work period. During that time, students are able to independently read and partner read. The teacher pulls small groups for instruction during the work period. At the end of the workshop, students come together for a closing, which we call the "share."
