Poetry Unit

Principle 1

The librarian works collaboratively with other information professionals in support of the library program, student achievement, and the profession, and understands the role of all types of libraries in an integrated learning environment.

Principle 5

The librarian communicates effectively with students and staff to determine information needs and applies knowledge of literature to guide development of independent readers.

April is National Poetry month. The Google slides and links show the lessons created for 4th and 5th grade classes that came to the library. In addition to the lessons, parents of 4th grade students were invited to see their Haiku poetry during a Lunch and Learn event.

At our school, the student population is changing. Our school is growing, which means our school library needs to grow to meet the demand. This Google form can be used on Meet the Teacher night, when students and parents come and meet the teacher before school begins. Most forms are completed electronically and this would allow parents to help younger students as well. Students who did not attend can be asked to complete the first week of school. The results of this form can provide valuable information to the librarian for collection development and to the classroom teacher on how to utilize the classroom library.
