Research Targeting Tool

The CRN has developed a Research Targeting Tool to better understand geographical prevalence of disease in England, and how it relates to where studies are actually conducted by research teams.

The graph opposite shows the prevalence of COPD in England and its regional variation

Using this data, we can understand how the prevalence of disease varies, and link this to data on where health services research of relevance to this disease is being done

In this way, we can make better decisions about where we do our research.

This will make it more likely that our results will reflect the patients who use the services - and that the benefits of research for patients and organisations are equitably spread

You can talk to your local health services research specialty lead to help with this

A recent BMJ article discusses these issues: 'The current geographical spread of research is failing patients'
