About us

This toolkit was developed by the NIHR Clinical Research Network Health Services Research Specialty. The NHS is a highly rated health system worldwide, but it depends on high quality research to meet patient need. The NIHR provides the support and facilities the NHS needs for first-class research by funding a range of infrastructure facilities.

The NIHR Clinical Research Network provides researchers with the practical support they need to deliver high quality research. As well as providing research delivery staff, we also bring together 'communities of practice' to provide national networks of research expertise.

The Health Services Research Specialty is one of these communities, made up of active health services researchers nationally. Our job is to ensure that the Health Services Research studies we support are delivered to time and target.

We support a wide range of research, testing new ways of delivering care for long-term conditions, assessing how to use incentives to improve quality of care, exploring ways of improving patient experience of care, and trying new ways to spread knowledge and evidence.

The NIHR CRN is part of NIHR Infrastructure. The CRN makes it possible for patients and health professionals to participate in relevant research. The networks support the set-up and timely delivery of commercial and non-commercial studies in the NHS in England. This includes advice on study feasibility, streamlined NHS permissions and effective patient recruitment. The CRN comprises 15 Local Clinical Research Networks (LCRNs) that cover the length and breadth of England. Each LCRN delivers research across 30 clinical specialties including: Cancer; Stroke; Mental Health; Diabetes; Medicines for Children; Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases; and Primary Care.
