Project 3

______________

Improve integration of research at a Primary Care level

Project Summary

_________

Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) are part of the Long Term Plan (NHS, 2018) and aim to deliver an integrated approach to the delivery of health and care services which meet the needs of their communities.  Primary Care sits within the ICS infrastructure and GP practices are represented within that infrastructure as Primary Care Networks, typically covering 30-50,000 people, funded to work together to deal with pressures in primary care and extend the range of convenient local services, creating genuinely integrated teams of GPs, community health and Social Care staff. This project aims to: understand how local initiatives developed in the region will become established; and draw on national strategy to develop locally aligned strategies that will inform our future direction for research activity in Primary Care and subsequently develop successful research delivery models that will easily integrate with and support research in other settings.

I work for the Clinical Research Network West Midlands (CRN WM) and am the Acting Deputy Chief Operating Officer and also Research Delivery Manager for Primary Care.  I have worked in the NHS for 25 years, 20 of those years have been in various research roles, mainly in the Primary Care setting.  I am currently the Project Facilitator on two of the Progression Plan projects, which are about raising the profile of research with the Integrated Care System (ICS) setting and improving integration of research at a Primary Care level.  Both of these projects impact hugely on the everyday work of my team in Primary Care and also on the wider work and future direction of the whole CRN WM health and care partner collaborative in the West Midlands.  I am very passionate about ensuring that the people of the West Midlands have access to high quality relevant research and about developing and enabling collaborative links to make sure that happens in the most efficient and effective way possible, hence my interest in these particular projects.
