In April 2021 the Department for Health and Social Care announced extra funding to be distributed among the 15 Local Clinical Research Networks (CRNs) across England, of which the CRN South West Peninsula is one.
The money is being used to transform the way research is delivered across Cornwall, Devon and Somerset to ensure research opportunities are available where people need them most, not just in hospital and NHS settings.
The CRN SWP has always had a team working across primary care and non-NHS settings, known as the Clinical Support Team (CST). However, with the additional money given to us by the Department for Health and Social Care we have been able to grow this team and create a new focus to prepare for a wider portfolio of studies in a range of settings and to ensure that there is staff capacity across the wide geography. The new lead for this project was tasked with integrating the CST alongside the newly appointed staff. All networks were asked to set up a direct delivery team which could work – the SWP direct delivery team is known as the Agile Research Delivery Team.
This workforce is made up of health and care professionals from a variety of different roles such as nurses, social workers, allied health professionals, administrators, data managers and research practitioners and assistants.
By growing our team we can deliver the evidence needed to improve health and care and meet the ever-changing needs of the populations we serve. The ARDT will help to grow research across the South West in collaboration with Universities and the national CRN and bring these opportunities to the region. The team will support organisations new to research setup and run studies for the benefit of the communities and populations they serve.
