As Project Head:
I led a comprehensive design and product development initiative successfully executed through a series of workshops and a needs assessment survey.
The project was Commissioned by the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India; this project was implemented in collaboration with the National Institute of Design (NID) as a knowledge partner under its Outreach Program.
The program began with a Need Assessment Survey-cum-Workshop held in November 2013 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, to understand the specific needs, techniques, material preferences, local market demand and cultural contexts of local artisans and stakeholders. This field visit laid the foundation for the subsequent phases, tailoring design interventions to meet local requirements.
Following this, a Product Development and Design Diversification Workshop was held at NID Ahmedabad in December 2013. This workshop aimed to enhance participants' skills in product design and development, incorporating innovative techniques and diversifying existing product ranges. It facilitated a cross-cultural exchange of ideas, encouraging participants to explore new design possibilities.
The final phase was another workshop in Addis Ababa from February 2014, building on the skills and knowledge gained earlier. This allowed participants to further refine their designs and develop products aligned with market demands and cultural heritage. The project emphasized sustainable design practices, fostering creativity, and promoting cross-cultural collaboration.
It successfully achieved its skill enhancement and product diversification objectives, empowering local artisans and strengthening bilateral relations through cultural exchange and cooperation.
The Project outcome:
60 products in the domain areas of personal accessories, space accessories, office accessories, kitchen accessories, toys, local lifestyle products
Public exhibition
A Public presentation to the Addis Ababa artisan community, tourists and craft enthusiasts

As Project Head:
I led a comprehensive initiative to enhance Bhutan's Cane and Bamboo craft sector. This project, funded by the Agency for Promotion of Indigenous Crafts (APIC), Bhutan, and supported by the Department of Cottage & Small Industry, Ministry of Economic Affairs, Royal Government of Bhutan, was executed in collaboration with the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad.
The project commenced with a detailed study of Cane and Bamboo craft clusters in Bhutan by a team of 2 NID faculty members and a Master artisan. This initial assessment provided valuable insights into the artisans' current training, design practices, and technical capabilities.
Based on this analysis, we organized a two-week Product Development and Diversification Workshop in November 2012 at the Rural Development Training Center (RDTC), Zhemgang ,Bhutan . The workshop aimed to familiarize 30 Bamboo artisans with new technologies, encourage the use of appropriate tools, and develop a range of contemporary Cane and Bamboo products that integrate functionality with aesthetic appeal. It focused on enhancing the artisans' skills, sensitizing them to quality standards, and exploring value addition strategies to improve product-making techniques and introduce new technologies.
As a result, approximately 50 innovative Cane and Bamboo products were developed, demonstrating significant market potential. These new products are expected to meet local and international market demands, thereby boosting the economic prospects of the artisans.
My role as Project Head involved overseeing all phases of the project, from need assessment planning and coordination to successful execution, ensuring that the objectives of skill enhancement, product innovation, and market readiness were achieved effectively. The purpose was to contextualise the design process to the Bhutanese craftsman and cocreate the product's significance in the local context.
The Project outcome:
50 products in the domain areas of personal accessories, space accessories, office accessories, kitchen accessories, toys, local lifestyle products
Public exhibition in
A Public presentation to the Bhutanese artisan community, tourists and craft enthusiasts in Peru
