Figma FigJam is an amazing interactive whiteboard. If you ever used Google Jamboard, it is like that, but better. From brainstorm to build and everything in between, FigJam makes it easy for people to collaborate in real time!
There is a GDST full licence available. To login go to:
Then you need to login using your school email. Click on the option that says 'SSL' below. Then login with your school email again.
Please note that Planet eStream will cease to operate for the school from September 2024. We will retain the digital signage service, so please do continue to send through slide sets to be shown. However, if you have anything on eStream that you use regularly, please look for an alternative and let HRI know of any concerns.
Ok - so not really an app, more of an extension, but at its most simple, Kami allows you to mark up a PDF and send it back to students. We have a school licence for Kami so you will have access to all the features. Kami works in Chrome so please remind pupils (particularly Mac users) to use the Chrome browser.
This YouTube channel gives you lots of information about using Kami, or this 'gettting started with Kami' section on their website, but, avoiding the need for all that paper!
To access the school licence for Kami you will need to navigate to the Kami site and login using 'continue with Google' and your school email address. Once Kami is set up you will be able to set assignments using Kami in Google Classroom. Pupils will also need to link to the school licence when they sign up to Kami.
Using Kami with Google Classroom - simply save a PDF to your Google Drive in the normal way (or you can create a PDF from a slideshow or similar). Then access the menu to create an assignment - you can give pupils instructions for signing up to Kami as part of the assignment. Kami also lets you add functions to google classroom so you can annotate work more effectively, such as past papers. A great way to save paper!

Have you started using Mote yet?
Mote is a browser add-on (rather than an app) and it allows you to send voice notes. These can then be automatically transcribed by the software including for technical language with Equatio (e.g. Maths/Science terms). Have a look at the Learning Hub, Amplifier Package or YouTube Channel for some great resources. The learning zone is a great place to start with Mote.
For getting pupils using mote this page is useful https://support.mote.com/hc/en-us/articles/360050073731-How-do-I-help-students-to-use-Mote-
When you first use the add-on you will need to link it to the Northampton High School account to get the premium benefits. This link shows you how to get started. You can then link it to Google Classroom and you will see the mote icon in the comment bar. The Equatio function now has its own icon to allow you to input maths and science functions, including graphing. Click the little blue icon next to the M to get going!

We have loved using Jamboard over recent years. It is a simple and quick way to share information and develop creative responses in class. Sad to see it go, but there are some good alternatives.
Google slides does allow you to annotate with pen over a slide, but does not save the annotations.
Figma and Figjam are great alternatives to Jamboard - sign up for a free account with your school email address to get going. Figma have now launched an importer to enable you to convert Jamboard files to FigJam files:
• Import your Jamboard files: Visit figma.com and click the “Import” button in the top right corner to start converting your Jamboards to FigJam files. To learn more, check out our importer tutorial or help center article.
• Join a training: Meet the Figma for Education team during a free live training where you'll learn the basics, walk through classroom applications and ask any questions.
Canva whiteboards are completely free to access and you don't need an account to get started. Signing up means you can save your templates of course and we now have access to the GDST full subscription so you can do a lot more than just whiteboarding with the platform!
Zoom whiteboards are also free - they are easy to use and save automatically, you just find them on your Zoom landing page (you will need to set up an account but this is free as well)
If you want a really simple editor for PDFs, try smallpdf this is an extension to Chrome that is free and allows you to edit and sign PDFs etc. As a viewer on your Chromebook it is perfect too! Sign up using your school email and add it to your extensions.
We have a school account with Seneca so if you have not yet had a chance to sign up please do so! This (free) site allows you to link seamlessly to tasks in Google Classroom. It has a huge range of subjects and it is linked to exam boards. Questions banks self mark and can provide excellent revision opportunities. Beyond this you can...
- Set assignments with automated marking - All assignments you set via Seneca Learning are marked by algorithm, generating a full detailed report in real time and with zero workload.
- Share progress data with colleagues - Invite another teacher to your class on Seneca so they can see the reports without you having to manually deal with data.
- Motivate your students with competitions
Have a look at the top tips document above for more ideas. Click here to access the teacher account page. When you sign up using your school email address it will recognise you and all your classes will be included automatically.
If you need more help, this page has a simple video to get you started adding classes. There is also a Seneca CPD youtube channel has great recorded sessions you can access at any time. There are more resources in the T&L shared drive here.
Ok, so Planet eStream is not exactly an app, but it can be used in a similar way and embedded in to firefly and Google Classroom pages. You can add content and browse elements included by other GDST teachers. If you're new to eStream, there is a helpful section in firefly to get you started here.
Mentimeter allows you to gather quick responses on given questions, either multiple choice or free text. It also does word clouds! A bit like Padlet, it will then display them in an overview on a webpage - great for plenaries and much more. Have a look at this short video tutorial.
Many of us know about the flexibility Prezi offers as an alternative to powerpoint or google slides. There is now an additional function that allows you to record or present your prezi live on video. Have a look at the site for more info here.
This is a simple mind-mapping app that allows teachers and students to collaborate easily.
James Earp writes: I am finding Poll Everywhere really good for being able to get everybody in the class to be able to contribute at once; I can set up an open question (perhaps to explain a particular point or to suggest reasons for what is going on in a photograph) and then they can all simultaneously type their answers, which will start to appear on my screen and then when I think they’ve had long enough to contribute we can go through and look at all the answers. It is anonymous which has both pros and cons (pro – they aren’t scared to respond; cons – did everybody participate; you don’t know and have to trust they did or get value out of seeing the answers). There are lots of options for questions (the word cloud is quite good too, but the free account is limited to 40 entries so factor that into your instructions). You can of course use the chat function in Google, but personally I am finding this better. There is a bit of learning to do in terms of how to use it so let me know if you want me to show you.
A really simple interactive whiteboard - see the pdf for more information!
Another great add-on for Chrome - this allows you to record your voice within a comment and it will also to text to speech! It even has a STEM mode which allows you to use technical symbols.
Dochub is a free PDF editor in Google. You need to add it to Google Drive to use it which is just a question of following some simple instructions in the link above. If you receive a PDF from a student for marking, you can then 'open in dochub' and annotate and comment in more detail than the standard GC option. The video below shows this in more detail.
This is a free extension for Chrome that lets you record your screen - great for flipping the classroom! It is a bit like using teams or meet with the recorder on, but with added benefits, such as being able to annotate the recording by drawing on it. It is really easy to use and you can add it to your browser from the link above.
This free software allows you to set up amazing mind maps and diagram-based boards to share with students and staff. It is used extensively by universities to allow remote teaching and learning where graphics are needed. If you set up an account with your school email you can share easily among other gdst.net accounts!
It can be a bit tricky to get special characters into a Google doc, depending on the kind of device you are using. This is a free add on that you can quickly put in place to ease the pain - just download and follow the simple instructions to use!
