Unit Overview: This unit will focus on digging deeper into literary text, close reading, collaborative work and discussion, English grammar and usage, punctuation and persuasive/opinion writing.
The Second Nine Weeks we will repeat many of the same standards that were introduced in the first nine weeks. The focus for the second nine weeks will be focusing the instruction on drawing conclusions, cause/effect, inferences, summarizing, and graphic organizers. During the second nine weeks we will focus on informative writing.

Read grade-appropriate words that have blends (e.g., walk, play) and common spelling patterns (e.g., qu- ; doubling the consonant and adding –ing, such as cut/cutting; changing the ending of a word from –y to –ies to make a plural).

Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.

Compare and contrast the themes, settings, and plots of stories written by the same author about the same or similar characters (e.g., in books from a series).

Identify relationships among words, including synonyms, antonyms, homographs, homonyms, and multiple-meaning words (e.g., puzzle, fire).

Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) on grade-appropriate topics and texts, building on others? ideas and expressing personal ideas clearly.

Explore ideas under discussion by drawing on readings and other information.

Demonstrate knowledge and use of agreed-upon rules for discussions and identify and serve in roles for small group discussions or projects.

Write persuasive compositions in a variety of forms that - State the opinion in an introductory statement or section. Support the opinion with reasons in an organized way. Connect opinion and reasons using words and phrases. Provide a concluding statement or section.

Nouns/Pronouns ? Writing sentences using abstract nouns (e.g., hope, thought).

Verbs ? Writing sentences that use regular and irregular verbs and simple verb tenses to convey various times, sequences, states, and conditions.

Apply the writing process to ? Generate a draft by developing, selecting and organizing ideas relevant to topic, purpose, and genre; revise to improve writing, using appropriate reference materials (e.g., quality of ideas, organization, sentence fluency, word choice); and edit writing for format and conventions (e.g., spelling, capitalization, usage, punctuation). Use technology to interact and collaborate with others to publish legible documents.

I can explain what nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs are, and how they function in sentences.
I can explain the difference between regular and irregular verbs and use them correctly.
I can remember spelling rules and apply them
Fluency Expectation: Goal: 90-100 wpm
I can identify or choose specific words to bring a sentence or story to life.
I can choose specific phrases to create a certain effect in a sentence.
I can choose words or phrases to add effect or interest when writing or speaking.
I can determine or clarify the meaning of unknown and multiple-meaning word and phrases based on grade 3 reading and content, choosing flexibly from a range of strategies. I can identify the affix of a word; define prefix, suffix, and root; and determine how the meaning of a word changes when a prefix or suffix is added, such as care/careless or heat/preheat.
Writing:
I can write informational/explanatory texts that examine a topic and express information clearly.
I can introduce a topic clearly and group related information together.
I can include an illustration in my written pieces if necessary.
I can develop the topic with facts, definitions, and details.
