To meet the rigorous demands of the IB Visual Arts curriculum and be successful your first year, it is necessary to spend 15 or more hours of discovery in your sketchbook over the summer to be prepared for beginning IB Visual Arts.
Below are the assignments for SL/HL FIRST YEAR AND SECOND YEAR STUDENTS.

1. Investigation Workbook/Journal (process portfolio) complete 17 organized pages of work to share on your first day back to school.
Your IWB will be your most important creation and resource during your IB ART Program.

NEXT STEPS
Prepare yourself with supplies to include a prisma set, drawing pencils, 2 black micron pens (03/05), watercolor set and any other materials you want to use in your IWB.
Purchase a hardbound sketchbook for your investigation workbook; no perforated pages, 8 1/2 x 11 or larger. Multimedia paper works the best.
Number your IWB pages both front and back. No pages get ripped out or skipped. you will work in order.
Each page is filled with a of Balance 50% text and 50% images to include titles on page tops!
Page images may be printed or drawn ( but try to Draw more to build your skills to see more carefully.)
When writing, go from left to right, horizontally, and legibly using black or blue pen- (NO PENCIL)
When writing be analytical and reflective instead of descriptive. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE anything.
When gathering info on pics or writing you will need to cite your sources.
Be creative in your approach and set yourself up for success.
2. Your first 5 pages in your IWB will be an investigation based on 5 art movements. Design each page to relate to that movement and provide important information using your own words about the art movement. Always Cite images and info sources (list URL; move on from Wikipedia to better sources), and relate your information to your own ideas and tastes reflecting why you choose that movement.
3. Your second 5 or more pages will be an investigation based on 5 artists from movements you previously investigated. Always cite image and info sources (list URL), and relate the information to your own ideas and experiences. Practice drawing in the style of each artist while providing info that pertains to each artist's style, where they are from and why they became an artist.
4. Your next five pages you will create 5 or more pages of observational sketches and drawings using objects from around your home. You will fill each page with notes about the object observed. you may want do several drawings on the same page showing different angles of your object. You may want to practice using prisma, watercolor, pastel, or even acrylic. If you use charcoal, you will need to spray the page with hairspray and put a coversheet inside your IWB for protection.
5. Visit your local bookstore and become familiar with the following art magazines (BOOKS a Million/Barnes and Noble) Art In America, ArtForum, Juxtapoz, Art News, Southwestern Art, Drawing Magazine. These are important resources to gathering current knowledge on artists of the past and present and what is happening in the art world.
6. MUSEUM VISIT- 1-2 hours
You are expected to visit at least 1 art exhibit/museum over the summer and to write and sketch about your observations in 1-2 pages in IWB to note your experience. Viewing great works of art in person in always more powerful than seeing them in a book or online and the experience will provide you with many ideas for your own artwork. Example- Sketch a painting/sculpture and write a haiku. DUE TO COVID- You can opt to do a virtual museum tour.

IB Art Summer Assignment- Second Year SL/HL Students
1. Studio Art: Two Self Portraits and 4-5 Pages of Process Work in Workbooks
Create two highly developed, expressive and finished self-portraits based on artful observation and a unique perspective. Add object that represent you in one of your portraits.
Consider basing your portrait on an art movement, possibly from your comparative study work.
Each portrait should be in a different art material. Work can range in size, but avoid to small s8 X 11 dimension.
2. Create 2 pages in your IWB for each portrait. Include photographs and notes (planning/reflecting) on the progress of the work. Give credit to other artists who influence your styles or ideas. Explain your ideas/intentions

3. Show photos of your artwork as it progresses and notes about your decision making, developing skills and techniques used.
