Help! I am new and don’t even know where to start! Where do I go to register for classes?
Please watch this video entirely before attempting to register for classes. How to Register at CFCC.
Can I still take courses at CFCC if I don’t have my license yet?
Yes! You can either carpool with a classmate, take a city bus, OR take an online course. CFCC does not provide transportation.
How do I know which classes to take?
After you log into your my.cfcc.edu account, you will need to click on “Self Service," then “Student Planning," then click on “View My Progress”
As you scroll down the page, your Progress page will show you which classes are available for you to take. You may only take classes within your designated pathway.
How much do CFCC Classes cost?
CFCC does not charge tuition for high school students, but student activity, technology, and parking/security fees are charged to students. The fee total is based on the number of credits taken and you can view those rates here. Parking/security fees are not charged for online classes. Students are also responsible for purchasing textbooks. The cost of college textbooks vary, and there are used and rental options for many textbooks.
Is Financial Aid available to CCP/Dual Enrolled Students?
Financial Aid via FAFSA is only available to high school graduates. However, CFCC has a financial assistance application designed exclusively for CCP students. Admitted students can fill that out here: https://cfcc.academicworks.com/opportunities/22029
This is my first time taking classes, what are some good classes to start out with?
Keep in mind that you are now taking college classes and they are different from high school classes. Many of you will be earning weighted credit for the courses you will be taking if you are in the college transfer pathway. You should treat the class as you would an AP class. All College Transfer courses carry AP weight in the high school GPA if they are 3 credit hours or more.
Classes in the Fine Arts/Humanities or Social/Behavioral Sciences are usually good classes to start off with. It is recommended that you take no more than two CFCC classes in your first semester.
As you view your progress page through Student Planning-Self Service, you will notice the different areas you are allowed to take classes from. You do not have to start in any specific discipline.
When are the classes offered?
Many of the college transfer classes at CFCC are usually offered on Mondays, Wednesdays, or Fridays in 50 minute sessions, or on Tuesdays and Thursdays in 75 minute sessions. However, it is extremely important to look at all the meeting information when selecting a class. Science and math classes have labs that go along with the class that may occur on a non-traditional day and time or online. *Read the fine print*
If you are in a Career and Technical Education Pathway, those class dates and times will sometimes be longer since they are more hands-on. Many of the Career and Technical Education Pathways are located at the North Campus. It is important to begin the program you have selected and follow the suggested block of classes in the suggested terms to ensure classes are available to you in a particular semester.
What campus are the classes located?
This information will be listed when you are looking at a class. Wilmington campus is located in Downtown Wilmington, the North Campus is located off of Blue Clay Road in Castle Hayne. Online classes are located online and will be accessed through Canvas in your my.cfcc.edu portal. College Transfer classes are offered at all campuses. You can view CFCC's CTE pathways by campus list here.
How do I choose my class times?
You want to keep in mind the bell schedule at your home school and choose CFCC class times based on that. Do not plan on driving back and forth throughout the day. Try to either plan classes in the morning or in the afternoon at CFCC to leave the other part of your day available for classes at Laney. You MUST have at least one class at Laney each semester.
Keep in mind your tardies will not be excused at neither CFCC, nor at Laney. Leave yourself plenty of time to safely travel back and forth. Ex: Ten minutes is not enough time!
I play sports, what do I do?
Sports related absences are still absences at CFCC. An absence is an absence, you are only allotted a specific amount of absences per your instructor. If you know that you have to travel every Thursday for a game, don’t schedule classes on a Thursday. Maybe an online class would be a better option? Keep in mind that your CCP classes do factor into your sports eligibility--this includes dropping or withdrawing from a class as well.
There is a message coming up that I need to have taken a prerequisite?
Some classes do require you to have taken a prerequisite, but many do not. If the message is telling you that you must have taken a DMA or a DRE class, you have already met that criteria by having a GPA that qualified you to enter the program. Please contact Ms. Connor at cconnor@cfcc.edu for clarification if you have a question about a specific course.
Which classes count as my core high school graduation requirements at the high school?
Please refer to this link to see how credits will count when being reported to your high school.
*Please note: CFCC classes that are 2 SHC or less will not award high school credit. Only classes that are three credits or more will count as a high school elective credit.
When I went to register, the classes I planned are now full. Where do I go from here?
Unfortunately this can happen. Once the class fills up there is usually a waitlist for the class. If you decide to add yourself to the waitlist, remember to check your CFCC email daily--you should be doing this anyway. If a seat opens in the class, you have 24 hours to claim your seat or it goes to the next person in line.
If the waitlist is closed, there should be an option under the class that says, “View other sections.” Click this dropdown arrow to show you the other sections that are available for this class--you can filter your results at the top of the page. There are usually a couple of different pages as well so make sure you toggle to the next page to see more options.
How can I make sure that my class registration went through?
To double check to ensure that your class registration has gone through, log into your my.cfcc.edu account, click on “Self Service” then “Student Planning” tab, then #2, then use the > tab to toggle to the semester you would like to look at. Once you get to the semester, your classes should be displayed and should have turned green stating “Registered, but not started” underneath the class. If the class is yellow and says, “Planned” then that means your registration has not gone through.
NOTE: Counselors do their best to work around your CFCC schedule, there may be a need for you to change your CFCC schedule before classes begin to meet graduation requirements at your high school. High school master schedules are traditionally not finalized until after the current school year ends.
I registered for my class(es) and decided I don’t want to take it, how do I drop it?
You have up until the day before classes start to receive a full refund for your class. If you know that you do not want to stay in a section that you have registered for, drop the class as soon as you are sure. Let someone else have the opportunity to take the class that would like to be in that section.
To drop the class, go in just like you did for registration and instead of the register button listed under the class, the button should now say “DROP.” Click that button to drop the class. If Self Service is not letting you drop the class, that means that self-registration has ended for CCP students and you will need to email Ms. Connor at cconnor@cfcc.edu to drop the class.
When are my student fees due and what happens if I don’t pay them?
As a CCP student you are responsible for paying your student fees. Fees are determined based on the type of classes you have signed up for and how many credits you have registered for. Failure to pay your student fees will result in you being purged from the classes you have signed up for, thus allowing someone else to register in your place. Pay attention to the Academic Calendar to view important due dates and deadlines.
When/Where do I get my parking pass and student ID for CFCC?
Once you have paid your student fees, you are able to go to the Cashier’s office at either CFCC campus to obtain your parking pass and your student ID. Make sure to bring with you a copy of your license and a copy of your class schedule.
Where do I park on campus for my CFCC classes?
https://cfcc.edu/about/maps-locations/ SP indicates Student Parking
Does CFCC accept AP or CLEP credit?
Yes. Scores must be sent officially to CFCC to award credit. Before sending AP and/or CLEP scores, please consult with Ms. Connor to ensure that receiving equivalent credit will not prohibit you from taking any other courses of interest in your pathway.
What are the normal Withdrawal procedures for Juniors and Seniors?
Prior to withdrawing from a class, you will need to consult with your high school counselor to discuss the need for withdrawal. Before your consultation with your counselor, you need to consider how a withdrawal may impact your future financial aid benefits - contact Ms. Connor for more details on this, and view the steps to withdraw here.
