BadgerLink is a collection databases provided by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction and provides information on everything from scientific research and historic events to educational and career options.
Unlike Google or Yahoo, BadgerLink itself isn't a search engine. Rather, it's a way to access multiple search engines and databases. The key to choosing the right one is pre-planning your search using the steps below.
Steps to using BadgerLink smoothly:
Form your essential question(s)
What research question do you need to answer?
Decide on keywords to search
Decide what database you want to search
What kinds of resources are you looking for? Do they need to be peer-reviewed? Have data? Quote from a text?
Consider the level of results you want. For example: a database geared mostly for use in hospitals may be difficult to navigate as a novice searcher.
Decide how to store your results
Remember to grab citations as you go. Use a citation tool such as BibGuru or KnightCite to help you with formatting.
Choose your database
Make an initial search using your question/keywords
Use filters! Databases allow you to filter results by type, language, publication date, and more! Using these will help you narrow down your results and find more useful information.
