On Friday 14th September, Computer Science and ITGS learners from Years 10 to 13 took part in a tour of HMS Albion, a British Royal Navy amphibious landing ship. Kindly arranged by Warrant Officer Glynn Moffat, father of Taylor in Year 10, learners were given the opportunity to tour the vessel’s key areas including the bridge and the control room. The ship was a hive of activity with navy personnel busy preparing the ship for a visit by staff from Singapore’s Defence Force whilst simultaneously showing three schools around!
Our guide gave an interesting insight into life aboard as well as an overview of the kinds of technology used throughout the 176m long ship. Some observant learners even noticed laptops with Windows XP running on them. This was certainly a surprise! The tour ended with a Q&A session with Warrant Officer Moffat. Lots of enthusiastic technology questions were answered!

For their current unit, Year 9 Science learners are discussing new technology in Chemistry and the focus for this particular lesson was carbon nanotubes which are used for reinforcing bicycle frames, windmills, and bulletproof vests.
Learners were challenged with creating a model of the structure using Strawbees which they then calculated was approximately 24 million times the actual size of the carbon nanotube. This also led to a discussion of how the arrangement of the carbon atoms in the tubes give such a strong yet lightweight structure.

Four teams of seventeen Year 12 Business Management learners recently participated in a two-week electronic training competition offered by CME Group. 14 teams participated from Nexus, UWC, Tanglin Trust and the Australian International School.
The Challenge involved learners trading a variety of futures contracts from multiple asset classes using a simulated trading environment on a real-time professional platform. Each team started with $100,000 seed money and were challenged to earn as much profit as possible over the two-week trading period.
Three of the four Nexus teams placed in the top three with the winning team earning a profit of over $73,000 which was just over $7,000 more than the second placed team.
Well done to all Year 12 Business Management learners who participated in the Challenge with genuine enthusiasm and enjoyment. Congratulations to Nexus Team 1 who won the whole Challenge: Luca Cassin, Vivi Feng, Kirsty Liu, Udit Srivathsan and John Yoon. Each member of the winning team will receive a prize from CME Group which will be presented by a CME representative at an upcoming assembly.

The leaners are working on a number problem where they need to sort 25 numbers under 60 into 10 different categories.
A kind of 5 by 5 jigsaw puzzle with numbers.
The learners had the opportunity to solve the puzzle using Google Sheets, Docs or Cutting and Sorting.
We chose a boardroom style for this learning activity so that the learners were physically all involved in the same task and those that needed more think time could easily pair up with a partner.
Quite a few of the Year 8's continued this problem at lunchtime and at home as it has a very high 'ceiling'.
