This year, as part of the careers section of the Wellbeing programme, we are extending our work to give our learners wider lenses to find what they want to do when they finish their further education. Often, we find that learners are restricting their job searches to those that they are familiar with or their parents are already doing. It seems that even after researching and working on their personal profiles in lessons, lots of learners still do not know what many jobs really entail. It is important to note that statistically, people often changes jobs at least 2 to 3 times and the global average is around 10 job changes! It is therefore important that our learners are ready for that as they make their choices of subjects and their upcoming exams for their school qualifications.
We have invited 6 parents to come in and over two sessions to give learners an insight into their working worlds. The sessions are to be held on 7th and 21st February. This is our first attempt at holding such an event, and we want to see if it is a useful way to help learners understand the realities of the workplace. If it becomes a useful tool, then we will welcome any other parents in the future to volunteer their time to present to this group of learners in the next academic year.

Student Council representatives are busily working on developing a range of workshops and activities for Diversity Week this year. Our theme is 'Generation Me' promoting a greater awareness and understanding of inclusiveness within and beyond our community. Guest speakers and classroom learning will build upon this theme.
In addition, our learners will be performing and participating in a whole school assembly in the gymnasium on Thursday 8th March between 9am - 10am. Parents and friends are invited to enjoy a parade of flags representing our community, join in the musical fun and celebrate the talents and diversity of the performances presented on that morning.
Finally, during the afternoon on the Thursday, we are planning a series of stalls that represent cultural diversity with food, games and information about our different countries or cultures. This was a great success last year but we would love some of our parents to offer a couple of stalls and work with the learners to create the event. As always, Nexus will be organising a wide variety of cultural activities and performances to celebrate Chinese New Year. As well as the traditional Lion Dance at 2.30pm on Friday, 9 February in the sports hall to which all parents and guardians are invited, we also have activities for learners throughout the week. Learners are invited to wear traditional Chinese dress to school on Friday 9th if they so wish, the alternative being school uniform.
We are looking for parents to organise and run some activities on Thursday 8 February. If you would like to help please contact me on the email below.
