BOOK WEEK

This year’s theme was The Enchanted Forest. Our Nexus community participated with enthusiasm in the events, and our fantastic parent volunteers helped to make our enchanted forest display in the library.

Secondary hosted Sunanda Verma the author of the 'Nameste Series' for their inquiry into Triumph Over Adversity. Her books feature stories of contemporary social catalysts, people who beat the odds to make our world a better place. Sunanda's workshops to Year 7 and 8 promoted thoughtful discussions about diversity and growth mindset and as a result, prompted further research into who makes a good role model and why?

Friday’s dress up was outstanding with many great costumes worn by our Nexus learners. Secondary teachers and other departments around school went all out with Where’s Wally, Nine Magic Butterflies, Little Red Riding Hood and Midsummer Night's Dream Fairies.

Thank you to our Nexus community for another successful Book Week!

NexFest 2019!

This was our first ever Nexus family festival, and it was wonderful bringing our community together. There was a great atmosphere, with plenty of laughter, fun, awesome music and delicious food. Our worry about the rainy days earlier that week was unfounded and the weather in fact, turned out superb! It was evident how much our children enjoyed the extensive games provided, together with you, our sporting parents! It was also extremely encouraging to see our learners running their own booths based on their own entrepreneurial ideas and skills they have learnt in school. All these made planning NexFest all worth it.

A big thanks to all our parents, learners, staff and fantastic facilities crew for your support. Huge thank you too, to the talented art-management team headed by our very own Nexus parent! NexFest'19 is definitely an event to be remembered.

World Scholars Cup

On the first weekend of the holiday, our intrepid team entered the Singapore Round of the World Scholar's Cup. It went well! Seth Yew (Y11), Olivia Chin (Y9), Nanda Nair (Y9), Sophia Reiner (Y8), Seoyeon Ji (Y8), and Andres Kriz (Y8) managed to score more than 20 medals across all events. They competed in 4 team events (Team Debate, Scholar’s Bowl (quiz show), Scholar’s Challenge (individual Multiple choice) and Collaborative writing, across a range of six subjects, all centred around this year’s theme: A World on the Margins. As well as the medals they qualified for the Global Rounds! There was tough competition in the Singapore Regional Round but our learners worked very hard to prepare and competed very well, especially considering this was the first time four of them ever competed in the WSC.

Y7 Trip to the Science Centre, 12th April

On April 12th, Year 7 learners headed to the Science Centre as part of their unit on Forces and Space. Learners watched two presentations in the OMNI theatre, an IMAX movie theatre which can simulate a planetarium. The first event was a live presentation which took us on a journey through space from our own solar system right to the edge of the universe and back, exploring planets, constellations, and galaxies en route. Learners really enjoyed this as they felt they were actually moving through space. A movie titled ‘Space Next’ then followed which documented flight through the ages and how humans might continue to expand human civilisation into space.

After a quick snack, the learners then headed into the galleries to learn about Climate Change from the many interactive exhibits. Learners were also able to take part in other activities which they found particularly interesting. Many of the them enjoyed the Fear exhibition and were also able to interact with exhibits on Light and Sound – one of this term’s units in Y7 Science.

Years 7-9 Inter-house Swim Gala, 18 April

Today, Year 7 - 9 woke to a steamy hot morning for the annual Inter-house Swimming Gala. Although it had already been a busy couple of days on deck, it was time for the pool to be graced with the presence of our middle school learners. Not only did they have the opportunity to show off their skills that they had developed throughout the year, but there were also plenty of house points on the line. It was great to see some of our upcoming swimmers have the opportunity to compete against our swim team athletes, and also to see all those who got in and splashed around all in the spirit of the House Cup.

The majority of learners then embarked on the inaugural ‘Water Polo Tournament’. A new initiative giving many more learners access to this House event. I think it’s fair to say it was a huge hit or some may even say a splash. The support, comradery and atmosphere around the pool was immense and capped off the event wonderfully.

A special thank you to our IGCSE PE learners who helped officiate andensure their younger peers were safe throughout the two days. Congratulations to all learners who were involved in another great house event. Watch this space for results in the next newsletter...
