A first of its kind, this series "Celebrating our Learners" aims to applaude our learners - who they are, the hard work they've put in, their achievements and their dreams. This week's edition is on our Business Studies learners. Please scroll down to read on!
Angel is from Indonesia and she joined Year 11 at Nexus in September 2020.
Despite not studying Business Studies before coming to Nexus and having missed a whole year of it, she decided to take it because she comes from a family of entrepreneurs and so she has always been interested in business. She has even started her own export business selling Singaporean goods to Indonesians and this is what ignited her interest in studying the subject.
She particularly enjoys the problem-solving aspect of Business Studies as it forces her to think critically and creatively and to identify possible solutions to problems. She found catching up on all the work she missed in Year 10 quite challenging but was very motivated and put in the necessary time to go through the textbook to learn the content and then practise writing and structuring answers to the exam style questions.
Angel shares that she naturally works hard on subjects that interest her and always pushes for higher grades. One of the secrets to her success lies in the fact that she sets goals for herself and always strives to achieve them. She works through past exam papers and then self-marks to see if her grades are improving.
All her hard work has paid off as she achieved a grade of 85% in the recent trial exams - one of the highest grades in the year group. She thinks that learners considering doing Business at Nexus should just “go for it because it’s a great subject and it can be very useful for future career choices”.
Angel really enjoys being at Nexus and is very grateful for the supportive teachers who are always willing to help her with her work. She particularly enjoys the international environment at Nexus because she has met many people from different backgrounds and cultures.
In the future Angel hopes to study Management Information Systems at a university that combines Computer Science and Business Intelligence together. Other options she’s currently considering include Engineering and Medicine.
Chenying is from China and she joined Nexus in October 2019 at the start of Term 2 of Year 10. She decided to take Business Studies even though she had not studied it at her previous school and had missed a term of it.
She was motivated to study business because both of her parents are in business and so, she has always been interested in how the business environment works. She is particularly interested in how entrepreneurs make decisions, how businesses are managed and structured and what motivates people in the workplace. Since taking up Business Studies, she has found it useful for communicating with people with business backgrounds, like her parents, because she can now understand some of the technical terms they use when talking about their business. She finds the time she spends talking to her parents about business to be a great way to bond with them!
Chenying is motivated in Business Studies because she hopes to attend a good university like Singapore Management University or Manchester University where she plans to study Business and Management. In the longer term she hopes to start up her own business.
Chenying always sets goals for herself - both short-term and long-term. Every week she puts together a to-do list and sets reminders for tracking her progress. She also uses a year planner so she can tick off goals as she achieves them.
Her hard work and motivation have paid off as in the recent Trial Exams she achieved the highest grade (86%) in Business Studies in the year group.
Chenying enjoys being at Nexus because she gets to know people from all around the world and to find out about their different cultures. She likes the open-mindedness of both the learners and teachers at Nexus.
