Our secondary music ensembles are up and running. It has been great to kick start the term with a fantastic sign up and many learners wishing to participate and make music together. If you forgot and want to be involved then please email Mr Fordham or Ms Lambert music@nexus.edu.sg
Secondary Orchestra get together each Wednesday after school and Secondary Guitar/Ukulele Group meets on Thursdays after school.
Our new campus has 16 music studios/practise rooms fully equipped with the latest instruments and technology. Whilst some rooms house upright pianos or accoustic drum kits; other have amps, microphones, midi player and electric guitars. Whether learners play a classical or rock instrument does not matter anyone is able to book out rooms during snack, lunch or after school until 4.30pm.
The music studios are very popular at the moment with learners doing individual practise or rehearsing in bands. Other learners such as our current Y7's are utilising these spaces to support the drum kit unit they are doing in music lessons to enhance their learning and practise between lessons. We would like to encourage more learners to make use of this amazing facility.
Since Nexus Music launched its very own Instrumental Program 18 months ago, it has gone from strength to strength. We have recruited outstanding International Instrumentalists and Educators to run our lessons daily within the Nexus Music Department. With over 190 learners currently having lessons this is a huge percentage of our Nexus community.
Regardless of age, lessons are available on a range of instruments. The only think that needs to be factored in is size. For example some of our young learners may not be able to stretch the length of a trombone! Whether you are a beginner or have previous experience of learning an instrument at your old school or when you were younger we welcome everyone.
Instrumental lessons take place during the school day. For Y2 and below and Y10 and above these are at a fixed lesson time weekly, Y3-9 have lessons on a rotational basis throughout the school day. We have instruments available to hire for those who do not wish to purchase an instrument initially, we are also able to organise trial lessons for those learners who aren't quite sure what to play and wish to try before committing to lessons.
As part of the Instrumental lessons we provide the opportunity to perform through recitals, assemblies, participation in a music ensemble or the possibility to take a music exam.
If you wish to find out more about timetabling, costs and how to sign up please click here for the Parent Zone on our school website.
At Nexus many of our learners play an instrument and participate in the ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) or the Trinity College Music Exams (Classical or Rock and Pop). These don't just offer a platform to perform or an incentive to practise, they provide structure of learning and enhance instrumental and performance skills. Our learners that follow these examinations end up being those that excel in music and have a life long learning and passion for performance.
I understand many of our learners take these examinations whether they learn an instrument as part of the Nexus Instrumental Programme or privately outside of school, We would like to start sharing successes and welcome learners and parents to email us when results are received so we can share with our wider community. Many learners are still awaiting result, so if you receive them before our next newsletter please email music@nexus.edu.sg
