What is it? There is still an opportunity to sign up for Operation Wallacea. This is a once in a lifetime trip to South Africa for year 10-13 learners.
In week one you are based in Kruger National Park Reserve, home to the iconic big game species and you will be collecting data used by a South African NPO (not for profit organisation) to monitor the effect large herbivores such as elephants have on the enclosed reserves.
For the second week we will move to Sodwana Bay, part of the Isimangaliso Wetlands, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Here learners can gain their PADI Open Water dive award or, if you can already dive you can complete an Indian Ocean reef ecology course.
Good to know….It is also possible to use the expedition to gain extra UK University UCAS points by doing an EPQ or extended essay project, and the expedition covers key aspects of the biology and geography syllabuses. In addition, if you are applying for UK universities you will automatically qualify for the ‘Expedition for a University Award’ that can be included on your university application form.
When 16th June to 29th June 2018
Cost $3800USD

Throughout the month of November Years 7-9 will be involved in ‘Word Mania’ an international schools initiative from Literacy Planet, which involves word building ‘against the clock’. It’s an online game in which learners try to build as many words as they can from the board of letters they are given. Not only does it support vocabulary building and language skills but it’s also fun, ‘gamified’ learning! Your child or ward will be playing at school and at home, building their minibeast to accompany them through the rounds of Word Mania and can even challenge their friends to become their word buddies. For more information please go to: https://www.wordmania.com/en/

‘Wear It Pink’ day will be held on Friday 10 November 2017 to raise awareness of the need for Cancer research and in support of the Breast Cancer Foundation, Singapore, http://www.bcf.org.sg. All Secondary and Primary learners are welcome to come to school in their own clothes, wearing a pink item of clothing for a suggested donation of $2. There will be a range of events on the day and during the week, secondary learners will learn about cancer research and how the Breast Cancer Foundation, supports people and families affected by breast cancer. Primary learners will learn about how we support events to help people with cancer such as the Run For Hope and ‘Wear It Pink’ day.
There will be activities held at break and lunch including a pink bake sale, face painting and temporary tattoos and more. We would like to encourage learners to bring in some extra money to take part in the fun! Pink ribbons will go on sale in school in the next week or so.
We are asking learners, parents and staff for help to bake pink themed cakes/ biscuits (a reminder that no nuts should be included, due to food allergies) for the bake sale. Please can any bake sale items be brought to the staff room from 08.00-08.20 on Friday 2nd November. Secondary learners and some Primary learners will have the opportunity to offer their time and help for this event.
