The theme this week has been 'Better Together', chosen by the learners to reflect that the Nexus community really is better together. It has been a wonderful week focused on our physical, emotional and social Wellbeing.
Arriving at school, children, parents and staff have had the opportunity to write a Wellbeing pledge, make a donation to the 'Food from the Heart' charity, listen to some awesome musicians as part of our 'Lessons Without Walls' programme and try out our rowing machine challenge!
Learners and teachers enjoyed a wide range of whole school and in-class activities, that ranged from yoga and mindfulness, to LEGO robotics and STEM challenges, to painting and and even break dancing! We ended the week with a range of physical fun during Active Thursday and a great 'Dress Up in What Makes You Happy' day on Friday!
It's Wellbeing Week here at Nexus. It's a time to reflect on how important a focus on wellbeing is, every single day. Every morning when we see our DP learners, we have practical wellbeing routines. Jim Bevan, our DP Phase Leader and his tutor team check in with learners. This is followed up with tailor-made PSHE sessions on Wednesdays. Our Year 13s for example, have benefited from their relationships with tutors and subject teachers and the safe, trusting learning environment they create. These relationships are a key part of ongoing learner Wellbeing. The IB research on this encourages routines and a focus on relationships. You can read more about Wellbeing here.
We’ve also had some fun this week with Kimberley Bennett, our Drama teacher. Our Year 12s had a great time in their Improvisation Workshop during Wellbeing Week.
The Year 10 IGCSE English as a First Language have been using one of their lessons for news and information literacy in the Learning Resource Hub. Ms. Jenny, Ms. Vicky, and Ms. L. have partnered up to do some collaborative work for the last 8 weeks. To celebrate International Women's Day (March 8th) and Women's History Month, the learners were introduced to some significant women from around the world and were asked to some research on their lives. They were also asked to write a quote down from the individual and discuss the importance of these women and their contributions to the world. Next term they will learn about fake news and the role media plays in their lives as well as try their hand at debating.
In Humanities lessons, Year 7 learners have been investigating the impact of British colonisation on Singapore. This has been part of their unit on 'How has colonisation shaped our world?' To support their understanding of this topic we went on a Heritage Trail of colonial Singapore. The learners had the challenge of creating a tourist video to show some of the key colonial buildings/sites and explain what they tell us about the nature of British colonisation in Singapore. 7B and 7G went out on Friday and after a lovely picnic lunch in Fort Canning, we were rained on for the rest of the walk. However, we all remained in great spirits and still managed to get some footage for the videos. 7R and 7W went out on Monday and they were faced with blazing hot sunshine! We are enjoying watching the videos they made in class this week - well done Year 7!!
