Our IGCSE Drama students have been busy in the last two weeks. From talking to professional actors, visiting the theatre and working on their own performances late after school, Drama at Nexus has been non-stop action this month.
Year 11 have been finalising their piece of devised coursework. This group of girls reflected on a woman's role in society and considered how women treat each other on a daily basis. For the past two months they have been creating a performance from scratch that looks at the lives of three very different women and how they fight for their beliefs, helping each other and manipulating each other to get what they want. Their performance of 'Innocent' is not only powerful and thought provoking, but it is a credit to the hard work these learners have put into this piece of coursework.
The IGCSE learners were also lucky enough to have a zoom session with two of the actors from 'LA Navet Bete' a professional UK based theatre company that specialise in devising original 'clowning' performances. La Navet Bete have won theatre awards with shows such as 'Treasure Island' and 'Dracula - The Bloody Truth' as well as 'The three musketeers' and it was such a fabulous opportunity for our learners to be able to listen to the actors Nick Bunt and Mathew Freeman talk about how they come up with their material and how to connect with an audience. Many thanks to La Navet Bete for taking the time to speak to us and for inspiring our IGCSE groups.
Our IGCSE Drama students went to visit the theatre last week. They watched 'Girls and Boys'. A one woman play by Dennis Kelly. The play re-tells the life story of woman her love and loss and takes the audience on an emotional rollercoaster of ups and downs. Watching live theatre and developing an appreciation for the performing arts is a fundamental part of the Drama course here at Nexus and this performance by Nikki Muller did NOT disappoint. It was lovely to be able to take the learners to the theatre again after the Covid restrictions had put a pause on live shows. If you have the chance to watch this performance by Pangdemonium at the Drama Centre then we in the Drama department highly recommend it. You won't know whether to laugh or cry!
We have had a rockin' time during lunch break this week. With Nexus Beats around the corner after Easter break, our musicians have been busy rehearsing all term in our music studios daily. As part of the preparation we brought a rehearsal to the school canteen so they could experience playing together in a more open setting as well as testing out using the sound system. With the support of Mr Tee, Ms Tash, Mr Fordham and Mr Hiro the learners all performed with confidence. It was a great experience for them ahead of the live Nexus Beats performance on Thursday 8 April.
Over the holidays our bands are invited into school for additional support to prepare their final performances. Unfortunately at this time tickets are only being allocated to performers. Each performer will be allowed 2 tickets only. This is due to CPE guidelines and our audience is being capped at 100. We apologise for any inconvenience caused however we will be live streaming the event so please watch out for further details regarding this and we thank you for your support.

As part of this week's Wellbeing Week our young musicians have serenaded parents, staff and learners on the way into school each morning. Our Lessons without Walls series allows learners across the school who learn an instrument inside or outside of school to rehearse in an informal setting with the support of one of our music teachers. It is also provides a lovely atmosphere to start our school day. This week we have seen 52 musicians participate from as young as Y1 through to Y13, in addition some have been only learning for a month or two whilst others performed an examination piece of IGCSE prepared piece of music.
This opportunity is open to all and we welcome new musicians at our next Lessons without Walls in Term 4. Please find a small selection of videos and photos below.
This week has seen our IGCSE music learners finalise their performing coursework. For IGCSE all music learners have 60% of coursework to complete which comprises of 30% performing and 30% composing. The performing element includes a solo piece and an ensemble piece. It has been a pleasure working with Jaiying, Danny, Nanda and Jack on their musical journey and we wish them all the best in their final examination.
As we come to the end of Term 3 I am so pleased to announce that numbers of learners participating in Instrumental lessons at Nexus continue to grow, with over 180 learners currently enrolled and having lessons weekly.
At Nexus we strive to bring you the very best tutors from Singapore. Our Instrumental tutors are selected for the outstanding musicianship and experience as educators within an International School setting. We are very lucky to have tutors that teach at a variety of International Schools as well as our own and we are seeing as a result more learners participating in music ensembles, more learners participating in music events and more learners taking their learning to the next level with either ABRSM or Trinity examinations. This is also feeding into our IGCSE and IB cohort for next year with numbers at the most they have ever been.
Our classroom teachers Mr Chris, Ms Tash, Mr Fordham and Ms Lambert are continually supporting our learners to follow their passions as well as opening their eyes to a variety of different experiences by introducing new instruments and musical genres. This often ignites a fire within our learners and they soon begin to show an interests and want to start learning an instrument.
We are currently accepting enrolments for new learners for Term 4. All information regarding timetabling, costs and sign up can be found on our Parent Zone on the school website. if you have any questions also do not hesitate to contact us at music@nexus.edu.sg.
