Applying to University… From a Nexus Learner’s Perspective
Meet Nicole Claveria, one of our Year 13 learners, who has recently accepted an offer from LA SALLE College of the Arts (Honours) to study a Bachelor of Arts in Design Communication here in Singapore.
Well done Nicole and thank you for sharing your story! - Ms. Aine
Nicole: Deciding on which university course to pursue can be difficult, however, an easy way for you to break down and decide which path to take is to note your passions and interests. This is something that I highly advise IB learners to prioritise early on in the IB Diploma Programme. Self-reflection allows you to process and acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses. In addition, you also need to be aware that the IB subjects you choose in Year 12, will also impact your decision in what course is available/suited for you.
When applying to La Salle College of the Arts Singapore, you must be aware that this institution only specialises in art majors - as stated in the institute name. Lasalle offers 3 different degrees - diploma, bachelors and masters. Some of the programmes they offer are animation, design communication, fine arts, musical and theatre production and management. You also need to be aware that certain courses will request students to submit a portfolio or an audition.
Learners who are holding a full IB Diploma do not need to apply to a diploma course as they can usually get direct entry into a degree programme. Whereas, if you are a learner who is holding a IB certificate (single subject certificates), you will be asked to apply for a diploma course before you can take on the bachelor courses.
Your portfolio or audition must be exceptionally strong and demonstrate prior formal training in the relevant arts discipline. The transcript from your diploma course must demonstrate that you have read and passed the equivalents of essential LA SALLE modules.
My art portfolio includes various processes such as compositional sketches, media experimentation and a research background about a specific artist that influenced my style of artwork. This is important when submitting your portfolio because art schools always look for learners who are curious-minded and show the desire to expand their knowledge about the arts (processes) and also know the basic elements of art.
The biggest piece of advice I would offer to other learners hoping to pursue a career in the arts is to keep experimenting - do not stop exploring new ideas and continuously practise your art skills. You are always learning no matter what! And also thrive in what you are most passionate about, as the arts are often a very broad subject.
