Teacher Professional Learning Conference
Our academic staff enjoyed a productive and inspiring professional learning conference here at Nexus on Tuesday 25th October. A range of workshops were delivered by some of the talented members of our team; however, we also brought in some prominent expert speakers from further afield:
Mark Osborne is a long-standing Nexus friend having provided lots of support for our academic staff over many years. He has a range of expertise to offer, and always backed with solid research; he worked with our staff this time around on positive engagement/behaviour and also on how to get the best out of our innovative learning spaces.
Cathy Berger Kaye is a world-wide authority on service learning, which is an important facet of education here at Nexus. She joined us via Zoom from the USA and helped us consider how we, as a learning community, can cultivate Service Learning within our curriculum. We had the opportunity to reflect on good practice and how we can effectively implement new strategies to develop authentic learning.
Lau Hon Shin joined us to provide a talk focussed on helping participants focus on understanding what is NSSI (non-suicidal self-injury), the functions and purpose of NSSI, and use a simple assessment to identify “At-Risk” youth to mitigate suicide. During the talk, participants engaged with a case study on how to identify NSSI and do screening for Suicide Risk Assessment.
The conference was titled 'Planning for a Positive Future' and all threads tied together towards helping us develop the positive and supportive learning environment that will enable our learners to flourish. These are important opportunities to keep Nexus at the forefront of cutting-edge educational practice and we certainly grasped all the opportunities that were offered on the conference day.
Secondary Music Evening
Wow what an incredible evening of music hosted by the NEXUS Secondary Musicians. Each Secondary ensemble has been rehearsing since the start of the year an eclectic mix of pop and rock tunes to bring to your the first ensembles concert in 3 years!!! "Pop Rocks" certainly blew our audience away with classics such as Toto's "Africa" by our Secondary Choir to "Beat it" by MJ performed by the Guitar Group. A couple of IGCSE and IB bands performed, the Chamber strings, Chamber choir and the new ensemble Jazz/Pop ensemble.
The performance had us toe tapping, clapping along and wanting to dance in our seats! The grand finale brought a spectacular performance of The greatest Showman's "From Now On" which brought together the Secondary Choir, Chamber Choir, Jazz/Pop ensemble, Senior Orchestra and even some Samba drummers!
A huge thank you to everyone that made the evening happen. However a special thanks to our tech team which is made up of our secondary learners led by Mr Amin and Mr Zul. Without their support the evening would not have been possible
