The Year 4 Mini-Exhibition showcased the children's knowledge and skills working with electrical circuits, and the relationship to energy. With reference to our Central Idea: Energy is converted, transformed and controlled to support our needs, the pod was full of energy, light, sound and music as various circuits came to life; the culmination of a month's work of exploring, investigating and applying learned knowledge. Other learners chose to explore the electrical circuitry within old discarded items. The process of carefully removing the screws and photographing the journey, provided many opportunities for discussions with parents in Year 4, and even some in Year 3, as their action packed exhibitions ran side by side. We hope you enjoyed the Year 4 Mini-Exhibition!
Watch our most enthusiastic visitors to the Mini-Exhibition (our Phase 1 learners!) trying out all the wonderfully creative games our Year 4 learners designed and built.
There were many squeals of delight!
What made that volcano in Hawaii erupt? Why are caves wet inside? How are stalactites formed? Why are there often caves behind waterfalls? How was the Grand Canyon formed?
Last week, Year 3 learners set about answering some of these questions during their Mini Exhibition. The learners were excited to share their learning and used the models they had made together with slideshows and practical activities they designed to describe their chosen landform, explain how it was formed and how they will change at over time. A big ‘thank you’ to our Year 3 parents for joining us for this event.
Following on from our inquiry into 'How we express ourselves', and inspired by 'Nexus the Whale Shark', Max and Finn wanted to take action and adopt a whale. They arranged for a swimathon to occur during their weekly swim lessons. Each learner in Year 5 then had the opportunity to find people to sponsor them on a per lap or whole swim basis. Today, learners in 5G and 5W will be swimming as many laps as they can, while 5B learners will be swimming on Monday, 14 May. Every lap they do will go to helping 'adopt' a whale, so that we can better monitor, research and protect these amazing animals.
A great visit to the zoo. We explored and inquired about the habitats that various creatures live in. The learners gathered information about animals that they had chosen in class.
We were lucky to have fantastic weather for the whole day and the parent support made the day really successful.
Here are a few photos of the learners with the chosen habitat they were focused on.
On Thursday 10th May, the Year 5 learners from Nexus traveled to GEMS Academy to visit their annual Grade 5 (Year 6) PYP Exhibition.
The exhibition had an overall theme of ‘Action’ and the GEMS learners showed that they had indeed taken action on a variety of issues that were important to them. They were able to share with our learners many issues that affect us locally e.g. technology recycling and globally e.g. plastic pollution.
After visiting the exhibition, our Year 5 learners commented that the creative and interactive nature of the displays and the interesting use of technology were some of the things that impressed them the most.
