On Thursday, 3 October, we are planning to run the Inter-house Years 3 to 6 Cross Country event here at Nexus International School (subject to weather and haze conditions). This will be an opportunity for all learners to finally 'have a go'. The focus of the day will be on participation in a fun and encouraging environment while also identifying those learners that would like to continue Cross Country training and participate in ACSIS competitive races.
As the race will be running through the school car park, access to the school by car will be closed from 8.30am to 10.40am. All cars should be parked in the school car park by 8.30am. Cars will not be able to leave the school site before 10.40am. Please feel free to come along to support your child/ward and join in the house spirit.
Below are the approximate race start times for each year level. Please note these are only approximate times and due to outdoor conditions we can not ensure they will be exact. To ensure you see your child participate in the event, please come out for the morning.
Your child/ward will need to bring the following items to school on the day:
Mr Graeme Massey
Learning Area Leader, Health and Physical Education
On Tuesday, 1 October at 9am, the Kindergarten learners will present their learning on the Senses and how they are used to explore the world, during their first Mini Exhibition of the academic year. The children are very excited to share their understanding and we hope to see as many families as possible.
On the afternoon of Wednesday, 2 October Year 3 will be holding our 'Cultural Fair 2019'. This is kindly run by a large number of parent volunteers who are running workshops to give our learners tasters of a range of cultural experiences. Aboriginal painting, Thai dancing, egg painting from Eastern Europe, origami from Japan, traditional tales from Sweden to name but a few of the activities our learners will have the opportunity to experience. Thank you to all our parents who are offering workshops at this event.
Year 4 learners will be exploring a new unit next term titled: Migration of people changes places and communities over time. A major part of this unit involves visiting a wide range of interesting places in Singapore and Malaysia.
DAY TRIPS
On October 29 and 30, the first of our two day trips will occur. Over these days the learners will be visiting Little India and places on Sentosa. On November 12, the learners will be selecting one of two trips: The area around Chinatown exploring the influence of Chinese culture on Singapore or exploring the European influence on the country.
More information regarding these trips will be sent to you in early Term 2.
RESIDENTIAL TRIP
The residential trip to Malacca is the most exciting aspect of the unit. We will be visiting Malacca on November 27-29. On Friday, 25 October, the Year 4 team will be running a presentation to discuss this trip. We warmly invite you attend on this day in the MPR room from 8:30am to 9:20am. An opportunity to ask questions will also be available.
To give more opportunities for children to engage in social entrepreneurship, we are trailing Market Day at lunchtime on Friday, 4 October (the last day of term). This first market day has 15 different stalls selling baked goodies, student-made products as well as some games.
Learners are able to bring in no more than $5 that they can exchange for tokens to make purchases.
This first Market Day the proceeds of the market day will go to Chora Chori, a charity that Nexus has a long-standing relationship with located in Nepal.
Diversity week is a unique opportunity to celebrate the wide diversity from within our school community and to express ourselves in fun and diverse ways. It is about respecting and understanding ourselves and others and exploring the richness of our backgrounds, cultures and languages as an international community.
This learner-led week offers a plethora of fun activities including House competitions, music, dance, food, films, handicrafts and games from around the world.
On Friday, 25 October learners are invited to dress up in a way that reflects who they are, which might reflect a national dress or a culture that they identify with. The culmination of the week will be that Friday lunchtime where there will be musical and dance performances to enjoy alongside a wide variety of learner and parent stalls.
