Our New School

We made it and we made it on time. Congratulations to the school team for hitting that goal! It’s been a whirlwind fortnight and the Nexus Parent Group would like to welcome all 'old' families to Aljunied and our many new families, most of whom I have had the privilege of already meeting, to our wonderful new site.

Having been a Nexus parent for nearly four years and having lived in the east of Singapore for nearly 18 years, I am more than happy for any of you to PM me on Facebook through the NPG page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/nexusparentgroup/) and I’ll be happy to share my number and we can have a chat regarding any number of matters, and/or a coffee. The School’s culture and that of the NPG is open-door and one based on the spirit of a tight community. It was fundamental to us all at Ulu Pandan and as we build our community east as well.

Every parent is a member of the NPG and you’ll be pleased to hear that your representative committee will be conducting its first meeting of the year very soon, within the first week of February.

We enjoyed a successful joint welcome coffee morning (with Pebble Painting) on Monday, 13 January 2020, an opportunity for parents to greet old friends and meet new friends. Then on Wednesday, 22 January 2020, the NPG hosted an incredibly well-attended casual coffee gathering to introduce new families to incumbent families. We counted around 50 parents at the Eco Café and chatting and networking continued until 11am. We also appreciated the many parents who kindly offered to volunteer for the NPG’s activities. We welcome all volunteers, ideas and feedback in order to always ensure that our voice and direction truly represent our diverse parent body.

Learner event: Whole School Shared Lunch - Celebrating Our Diverse Community, Friday, 31 January 2020

We are absolutely delighted with the over one hundred parents who have volunteered their time to help make our learner-led, inaugural International Whole School Shared Lunch a success. All learners will experience the United Nations of food - a true representation of the melting pot that is Nexus!

Coffee Morning Workshop: Meet The Author, Friday, 21 February 2020 at 8:30am in the Parent Lounge

Back by popular demand, please join us as we welcome the author of the bestselling novel Travails of a Trailing Spouse (Straits Times Press, 2018), Stephanie Suga Chen. Come and hear about Stephanie’s amazing journey and take a peak at her newest work (copies available for purchase) Disunited Nations: International School Mums at War. An excellent morning of storytelling, humour and sarcasm awaits!

Our Dedicated Parent Spaces

The Parent Lounge is located on Level 1 at the north-western corner of the Playing Field. We are still in process of fitting the space out, but it is open and all parents are welcome. This room is currently combined with the Parent Shared Workspace. Over the June/July school holiday (or possibly before) a larger separate Shared Workspace will be created, thus providing the parent community with two fantastic spaces.

Coronavirus

As you will be aware, a case of the Wuhan coronavirus has been detected in Singapore. This case and his travel companions have been isolated or are being screened. Currently, there is no evidence of spread. The School released a communique earlier this afternoon that there is a procedure in place and what steps to take if your children feel unwell and to inform the Learner Services if you intend to travel to China. Please abide by the School’s requirements and recommendations. Staying informed of advisories and open communication is the best defence.

About the Nexus Parent Group and the NPG Committee

The NPG is an independent group within the school community. Its mission is to develop this community to the benefit of our learners. The NPG's work is organised through the NPG Committee, which comprises an Executive of five elected office bearers and a number of general committee members. The NPG has two main goals: to provide parents with a platform through which to start conversations and provide feedback to the school – to be “a voice of the parents”, and to offer a range of social, cultural and special interest events that support a close-knit and connected learning community. We welcome every parent to become involved in our activities, with the main aim of developing our school’s community. Every parent and guardian is a member of the NPG and our ideas and input are welcomed. We can be easily contacted via email or Facebook: npg@nexus.edu.sg https://www.facebook.com/groups/nexusparentgroup/
