Nursery have settled back into the routine with lots of energy and enthusiasm. The learners were really excited to see their friends and teachers again after the break. We are very happy to welcome five new learners to the Nursery community. The learners have been very kind and caring and have helped their friends become familiar with the learning space.
We are excited to start our Unit of Inquiry this week, the Central Idea is, Collaboration Helps Build a Community. We will be exploring the way people help each other and we will begin with the Nexus community. We look forward to sharing the learning with you throughout the term.
We have passed the half way mark of the academic year; how time flies when you're having fun learning! And we're proud to share that our Kindergarten family is growing. This term, we warmly welcome all the new staff and learners in KW. They have settled well into their new class and we've been so happy to see the rest of the learners eagerly and enthusiastically showing them around and including them in their activities.
We are excited to start our new Unit of Inquiry this week, all about how The Arts help us to express ourselves in different ways. We have started looking at different forms of expression and we have loved sharing the many ways we express ourselves outside of school. We have many dancers, singers and artists in the making!
We have had a wonderful start to the new year as each new class welcomed some new friends last week! They have settled in beautifully and it has been lovely to see the amazing role models we have in each class! This week we have started our new Unit of Inquiry on Peoples Homes Can Be Influenced By the Environment. We explored what a ‘neighbourhood’ is and drew some amazing pictures of where we live and our surrounding areas. We read a story called Lucia’s Neighbourhood and discussed what we find here. The learners made connections to people working and living here and spoke about houses and homes, which was a wonderful segway into our new Unit.
What a great start to the new semester Year 2 have had! Having welcomed 13 new learners to our team, 2Y have been having a lot of fun settling in, getting to know new friends and exploring Nexus.
This week sees the culmination of our current Unit of Inquiry into Sharing the Planet. Over the past two weeks, the learners have been putting their research skills into action. They created a diorama of a habitat of their choice, and it was wonderful to see the attention to detail and creativity used to replicate the colours and textures of the natural environment. The learners have also written an information report about their chosen habitat. They identified how humans are impacting that habitat and, most importantly, how they can take action to make a difference, such as recycling, reducing the amount of paper they use, and switching off lights and electrical devices. We look forward to sharing this work with you at the upcoming Learner Conferences.
What a great start to the New Year with the addition of some new learners to the Year 3 community. A warm welcome to Timothy, Jasmine, Elise, Ada, Kaiwen and their families. It is lovely to see the Year 3’s eagerly greet the new learners and help them to settle in. Year 3 are already hard at work learning about the elements of narrative writing (character, setting, plot) and how to use descriptive language, such as adjectives and adverbs as well as using their senses to enhance their creative writing. The learners look forward to sharing some of their writing with you on February 5th at the Learner Led Conferences.
It was a joy to welcome Year 4 back to school last week and it has been a great pleasure to see everyone settle smoothly and quickly into their learning. We would like to extend a warm welcome to our new Year 4 learners and thank their 'buddies' for helping them to feel at home. We are continuing our Unit of Inquiry delving into the Central Idea, 'What we wear tells a story about ourselves'. We have been finding out about ways in which the clothing industry can impact the environment and what actions we can take to avoid wastage. To support our inquiry in our Maths lessons Year 4 learners are developing their data handling skills to collect, organise, present and analyse information. Which colour T-shirts do different age groups prefer? How do shops decide how much stock to order? What resources are used to make a pair of jeans? And perplexingly, where do all those lost socks go?
Year 5 learners have returned to school that little bit taller and feeling relaxed and rested. It is fitting that our Unit of Inquiry 'Who We Are' is focused on the Central Idea of 'As we grow up our Bodies, Behaviours, and Responsibilities Change'. Learners have been curious and motivated to inquire into the brain and have developed thoughtful questions for their mini inquiry. They have also completed a personality test, which has helped them to better understand key personality factors which drive our thoughts and behaviours.
This week has seen a focus on Positive Puberty and the physical, emotional and social changes that young adolescents are faced with as they grow and change. Learners are more aware of the changes that both boys and girls face throughout this time. Our school nurse also supports our lessons with more detailed information about these changes. Learners have asked thoughtful questions and we encourage them to continue to communicate with their families at home about their learning and further questions they might have.
Is it already Term 3? Wow, how time flies. Looking forward, it is hard to believe that we are looking toward the end of our Primary School experience in two short terms. However, before everyone moves onto their Secondary School journey we have some amazing learning experiences in Year 6.
Our new unit of inquiry started with an exciting trip to Sungei Buloh where the learners were able to develop a greater appreciation and awareness of just how important mangrove forests are to both the local and the global environment. We were also able to celebrate the Year 6 Nexus Film Festival on Wednesday. Everyone dressed in their best and the paparazzi had a field day as they took hundreds of photos of our famous directors, actors and producers. We would like to thank all of the parents who were good sports and got involved in the filming so that our learners could fully realise their creative talents. A selection of photos from the event can be found in the 'Recent Events' section.
