Singapore and surrounding countries can be affected by haze from time to time.
As you may be aware, we have been monitoring the Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) since the start of term. The well-being of all our learners remains our top priority. We will act and react according to the 24 hour PSI Level on the NEA website. In common with the international school community, we have adopted a PSI level of 101 as an actionable threshold, at which point we modify our academic, ECA and CCA programmes. However, we will react during the day if necessary or if observed conditions give us cause for concern. We will also follow the specific directions given by Minister Of Education (MoE). Please do note that poor visibility and smell do not necessarily mean higher particle levels in the air. Poor visibility can be due to many reasons eg: presence of mist, sun reflection, etc.
We have been asked why we use the NEA reading instead of the Air Quality Index (AQI). The NEA themselves provide a good answer to that question here. The AQI relies on the NEA data to make its calculations, but it has a different calculation system.
To help with decision-making for your own family activities, we recommend that you download the NEA app ‘myENV’. It provides useful real-time information on the weather in Singapore, including PSI levels, as well as offering predictions for the next 24 hours.
The week starting Monday, 23 September is Nexus UN Global Goals week. In support of the goal: 'Quality Eduction for All', on Wednesday, 25 September all learners are invited to dress to follow the dress up theme of “When I grow up” for a $2 donation. There will also be a range of activities (such as Photo Booths, Guess the Sweets in the Jar, Henna Designs and Ball Games) for our Primary School children run by our Year 12 learners as part of their CAS programme. All proceeds will go to the Year 12 CAS project at the Kong Maha Primary school in Kampong Cham, Cambodia. Children are encouraged to bring a couple of extra dollars (no more than $5) to enjoy these activities.
Details of the full programme of activities for the week will be shared via our communication channels next week.
