From our Head of Primary
This week's whole-school highlight was the Year 5 Production of 'Be the Change!', an incredibly powerful and moving performance highlighting the lives of change makers, such as Rosa Parks and connecting it to current day struggles for equality. The Year 5 learners will be performing again as part of the UN Global Goals Week for parents and learners across the school.
Using the Hub as a window into the classroom
The Hub is used throughout the Primary School, as a 'window into the classroom' - to share learning happening across the curriculum, to post class reminders and Home Learning.
Download the Teamie App to your phone/tablet/ipad from the appropriate store. We apologise that it is not called 'The Hub' on the App Stores - the developers, Teamie, use this App across many educational institutions but Nexus decided to call the platform 'The Hub' within our community.
Use the username and password you were given to sign on to the App (or through a browser on a computer). Please contact Student Services if you have forgotten them.
If you click on Newsfeed icon at the bottom of the screen you will see what is happening in your child's classes. The default setting for the app will provide notifications that take you straight to this stream.
This fortnightly Newsletter is an important part of our communication with our whole community. Through it we try to alert you to upcoming events and post important notices. As you know we also use direct email for important, often year-specific events, such as day trips and overseas trips.
For publication of Learning Summaries and booking Learning Conferences appointments we use the Engage Portal, so you will not have too much interaction with that platform, apart from at key points in the year (booking Learning Conferences apppintments in September and February and viewing Learning Summaries in December and June).
For CCAs we use CHQ to manage all the events and the registration of learners at each CCA. It is unfortunate that there is nothing else quite like it on the market, but we are aware that it is an additional platform for you to use occasionally. Please note that learners in Years 5 and 6 are responsible for choosing their own CCAs through CHQ.
We look forward to seeing you all next week for our Parent Teacher Conferences. This is an opportunity to have a conversation with your child's homeroom teacher about howyour child has settled into school. All our specialist staff are available too for informal chats about the different specialist subject areas. If you have not yet signed up for an appointment, please access the Parent Portal.
On Monday evening, we are also hosting one of the most popular Parent Workshops of the year: RESTORATIVE PRACTICES & CONFLICT RESOLUTION. This will take place in the auditorium from 7.30pm to 9pm. This is an exclusive workshop with Greg Jansen, an international expert on Restorative Practices and Conflict Resolution. Join us for this twilight session to find out how you can incorporate these practices into your daily interactions with your children.
The following week (starting Monday, 23 September) is Nexus UN Global Goals week. On Monday, 23 September the UN Climate Action Summit takes place in New York followed by the two day Sustainable Development Goals Summit . To support this work, each year we kick off new initiatives in support of the 17 UN Global Goals for 2030.
In support of the goal: 'Quality Eduction for All', on Wednesday, 25 September all learners are invited to dress to follow the dress up theme of “When I grow up” for a $2 donation. There will also be a range of activities (such as Photo Booths, Guess the Sweets in the Jar, Henna Designs and Ball Games) for our Primary School children run by our Year 12 learners as part of their CAS programme. All proceeds will go to the Year 12 CAS project at the Kong Maha Primary school in Kampong Cham, Cambodia. Children are encouraged to bring a couple of extra dollars (no more than $5) to enjoy these activities. Details of the full programme of activities for the week will be shared via our communication channels next week.
Looking further forward we are extremely exicted to unveil our new school at a Preview Event on Saturday, 9 November - please save the date, further details to follow!
Enjoy your weekend.
