What a way to end term 3! This week our learners have participated in a variety of fun and engaging activities to celebrate our love of books and reading. Each day learners listened carefully to guess the mystery reader fror the day and eagerly awaited to be caught by the library paparazzi on camera reading. The Book Fair was a hit with our learners as they were able to find and purchase books of interest from the titles offered by the 4 visiting vendors. Lunchtimes were extremely busy in the library with book mark colouring in activities and guest storytellers. Our Year 4 learners organised a Book Swap which was a huge success.
Our learners were very lucky to have the authors of Sherlock Sam, Adan and Felicia here to present their series and discuss their ideas and the different processes of publishing books. The learners were super excited, made great connections to the characters of the books and even had their own books autographed!
Our celebrations concluded on Friday with assemblies to show off our fancy book character costumes and a visit to the library or auditorium to make fantastic space themed crafts. A big shout out to all those wonderful parent volunteers who helped to organise the amazing universe display in the library, the fun and creative activities that the learners were so engaged in. We appreciate and value your time and support.
Diversity Week 2018 was an awesome week celebrating: Generation Me!
Learners and staff across the whole school immersed themselves in a range of experiential activities, food stalls and to end the week, an amazing whole school assembly to promote and embrace personal and intercultural awareness. Well done to the Student Council and staff for organising and supporting this important event.
As part of the Diversity Day Assembly celebrations the Primary Choir joined the Secondary Choirs and Orchestras in a collaborative performance to celebrate Diversity. Inspired by the recent movie 'The Greatest Showman' our musicians performed to an audience of over 1000 learners and parents the award winning song 'This Is Me'.

For our Year 6 Residential trip this year, learners went on a challenging adventure to Langkawi. The focus of the residential trip was to explore the impact of humans on the environment and inquire into how a balance between the needs of people and the needs of the environment can be achieved.
Activities included exploration of mangrove rainforests, tropical rainforests, beaches and coral reefs. Students learnt of the Geopark surrounding Langkawi and viewed mountains which were formed 500 million years ago. Beach surveys were conducted to identify the types of litter on the beaches. Students also participated in coral regeneration program, helping to create a nursery reef which will later be transplanted back into the ocean.
Stepping back in time, the students explored traditional rice farming and herb gardens and learnt how coconut trees were such an essential part of life.
Other challenges included problem solving and team work activities and raft building. They also learnt of the local legends which explained how the area was created.
The hot and tough conditions challenged many of the learners, but everyone took it in their stride. A huge thank you goes out to all of the staff who helped make it happen.

On Monday, 5 March and Tuesday, 6 March, our Year 1 and Year 5 learners enthusiastically took part in the Safe Riding Programme delivered by the very experienced trainers from Unique Speed of the Singapore Land Transport Authority. Nexus was proud to be invited to be the first school in Singapore to be part of this programme.
One of the main aims of the Safe Riding Programme is to equip the learners with the knowledge and skills to ride safely to ensure safe and harmonious journeys while using the footpaths and roads in Singapore.
We are sure that they will put much of what they have learnt into practice.
In Year 3 we have been finding out how ‘Systems connect communities’. Last week our Year 3 explorers headed off to Gardens by the Bay. But wait! Where are the school buses? What? No school buses? This was a trip with a difference! Each small group planned their journey using the public transport system, packed their bags and set off. While using the bus and MRT systems our Year 3 explorers considered how the public transport system supports people with disabilities and those who do not read Chinese or English. Once at Gardens by the Bay, we looked at some of the sustainable systems such as the irrigation system at Dragonfly Lake and the Solar power system on the Giant Trees. Upon our return, reflections included: “We did it all by ourselves! We took the adults instead of them taking us!” “I felt proud because I now know how to use the MRT map and Google maps.” and “I think I will ask my mum if I can plan our next holiday!”
A very big thank you to all our Year 3 parent volunteers who made this trip possible.
One might be hard pressed to find a better way to end a term than with a market day! The cafeteria was a buzz on Wednesday morning with learners, teachers and parents all involved in what is now a Year 4 tradition - MARKET DAY!
There were a host of stalls this year, and we took to Market day with a new approach. Taking a journey back to our previous units, the learners attempted to make a meaningful connection with the underlying conceptual themes that drove the units and combine them with their product and service ideas. This took the form of Wellness products or services, links to history, and self-expression, as the learners expanded their thinking to explore ways to make links.
Returning to class afterwards meant time to count the earnings, subtract our expenses and see if we had adequate funds to return to our investors! But whatever the outcome, another fun and engaging Market Day has passed, and we await the next one.
Another fabulous Mini Exhibition was had in Kindergarten last week. The learners were all very excited to share their learning journey on our current Unit of Inquiry 'Plants and Living Things Need Each Other'. The children celebrated their learning throughout the Kindergarten with observational drawing, representing the life cycle of a plant through modelling playdough, making bird feeders and many more exciting hands on engagements. It was wonderful to watch and listen to the children as they moved around the learning space sharing their understanding with their parents. Thank you to all of the parents and caregivers who came to share the Mini Exhibition.
Nursery learners have worked very hard in music to put on a simple performance about 'living things'. One of the songs have been 'Walking in the Jungle', where learners used various actions, musical dynamics and instruments to demonstrate an imaginative journey of running into wild animals in the jungle.
