Mid-Autumn Festival celebration in primary Mandarin class
This past week, our Primary Mandarin classes celebrated the Mid-Autumn Festival, one of the most important traditional Chinese Festival. Learners learned about the legend of Chang'e and Hou Yi, and participated in engaging activities to explore the festival's rich cultural significance.
In class, learners sang songs, recited poems, and practised rhythms related to the festival. We also organized fun activities such as "Shooting the Sun," "Running with the Moon," mooncake tasting, and even making their own mooncakes! It was a wonderful opportunity for our learners to immerse themselves in Chinese culture and traditions in a fun and educational way.
Year 13 Hai Di Lao Dining Experience
Last week, our Year 13 learners had an unforgettable experience at Hai Di Lao, combining authentic Chinese cuisine with an immersive cultural and linguistic adventure. The dining trip was not only about enjoying a meal but also an exciting opportunity for learners to actively apply their Mandarin skills in a real-world setting.
Learners embraced the famous hotpot experience, selecting from a wide variety of fresh ingredients such as vegetables, seafood, and traditional Chinese delicacies. They enjoyed the hands-on process of cooking their own food in the communal hotpot, engaging with the waitstaff and ordering dishes in Chinese, which helped solidify their vocabulary and conversation skills.
The meal was accompanied by several engaging performances that made the experience truly special:
变脸 (Biànliǎn): Learners were mesmerized by the traditional face-changing performance, where the performer swapped masks with incredible speed and precision, a truly unique aspect of Sichuan opera.
科目三 (kē mù sān): Adding to the lively atmosphere, the restaurant's waitstaff treated us to an entertaining dance performance, mixing modern moves with traditional styles, much to the delight of the learners.
Throughout the evening, learners took every opportunity to practise their Mandarin by interacting with the staff, asking questions, and even discussing the performances. Their confidence and excitement in applying their language skills were clear, and it added a meaningful layer to the overall experience.

A huge thank you to our families who took the time to come and share in and celebrate the children’s learning.
