Happy New Year everyone.
Please note that the Term 2 reports for Y10-Y13 learners and the Semester 1 reports for Y7-Y9 were published in the Engage Parent Portal at the end of last year. Your child has indiividual targets based on the CAT 4 cognitive abilities test they did as they started the programme they are learning in (i.e. MYP, IGCSE or IBDP). These summary reports are meant to give you an overview of how your child is progressing towards the level they will attain at the end of the programme they are learning in. We use live feedback in Canvas to give you regular updates throughout the term as to what your child is learning and what they need to work on. Please sit with your child and ask them to show you. There is far more detail on the web browser than can be seen on the App. Teachers direct the feedback to the learner. We know there is still some variability between the feedback and we continue to work with staff on this. As a guideline there should be between 8-16 pieces of feedback per learner from the different subjects during a term depending on the programme they are studying in. This is significantly more information than one annual static report and is valued more by learners and supported by research as a more effective way of supporting learning and progress.
We appreciate that the curriculum your children study may be different to your own school experience and we endeavor to help you understand what we do through parent workshops, literature and learning conferences. There is a lot of information on each of curriculum and assessment in the Parent and Learner Handbook and Curriculum Booklets on the Parent Zone part of the Nexus website.
Please note some subjects or topics within subjects are taught in rotations to enable learners to benefit from subject expertise of specialist teachers. This means there may be some blanks in the reports in the first semester.
We know that for many of you the amount of grading in MYP can be confusing. There are eight subject groups. Each subject group has four criteria to grade to give learners lots of opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge, skills and understanding. Simply put this means there are 64 criteria assessment across an academic year.
Criteria assessment need not be high stakes and do not define a learner. They simply reflect how the learner has done at that moment in time against a set of criteria. Criteria grades are used to calculate a holistic subject grade which is the indication of a learners attainment.
This video helps explain the grading in more detail.

We are thrilled to share some exciting news regarding the latest initiative undertaken by our students here at Nexus! Under the expert guidance of Thorben Linneburg from Aerospring Hydroponics, our students have embarked on an innovative journey into Urban Rooftop Farming.
Recently, Mr. Linneburg delivered an insightful talk and presentation, shedding light on the intricacies of the rooftop farming system. His expertise proved invaluable as he guided our students through the nuances of the Aerospring Hydroponics system, particularly focusing on effective seed germination in our state-of-the-art SingGrass system.
The session with Mr. Linneburg not only provided theoretical insights but also offered hands-on experience, equipping our students with the knowledge and skills needed to successfully germinate seeds. The SingGrass system, designed for optimal seed development, promises to be a key component in this exciting venture.
As we eagerly anticipate the germination phase, our students are gearing up to transfer the sprouting seeds to the rooftop. The forthcoming weeks will witness the transformation of our rooftop space into a flourishing garden, where we plan to cultivate a variety of edible herbs and plants.
This Urban Rooftop Farming initiative aligns with our commitment to sustainability, education, and community engagement. We believe that through this project, our students will not only gain valuable hands-on experience but will also contribute to the well-being of our local community.
We look forward to sharing the bounty of our rooftop farm with the community, fostering a sense of connection and promoting the importance of locally grown, fresh produce. Stay tuned for updates as we embark on this exciting and sustainable journey.
