Year 3 Learner Led Action
By Julia 3B
Together with my friends Ronnie, Sydney, Fara and Marina, we wanted to do something to help people who do not have a home.
We presented our idea to our teacher, Mr. James, and he said it was a great idea. Next, we presented our plan to Ms Fiona and she agreed that we could go ahead. It was agreed that we could have a charity day for Year 3 and 4, and raise money for the Homeless Hearts Of Singapore on the 26th of May.
The whole of 3B helped by making posters and the marketing team displayed them digitally.
The charity day exceeded our expectations and we raised $667.70! It showed me and my friends that even though we are still kids, we can make a difference and do something good for others.
Early Years Elkan Certification
Our Early Years Team is continuously working hard to support and develop the communication skills of our young learners. To deepen their understanding of speech and language needs in the learning environment, the team have recently completed the UK accredited Elklan Speech and Language Support for 3-5s course. This course links research on early language development with best practice to provide teachers with up to date theoretical knowledge and practical tools to promote and extend communication within their learning environments. Over the 10 week course our dedicated teachers explored a different focus each week including attention and listening skills, play for language and children’s language journey, promoting the development of vocabulary and how to create a communication friendly environment. We are very proud of our certified early years teachers for their dedication in providing the best possible learning experiences for our young learners.
Reading Dogs
This term, Nexus has implemented an exciting new literacy initiative that utilises a holistic approach to learning. Working with Animal-Assisted Interactions Singapore (Singapore’s first social enterprise specialising in animal-assisted interactions and interventions), Nexus is the first school in Singapore to use dogs to support reading through the “Read with Rapha” canine-assisted reading programme. This programme helps to promote a positive relationship with reading, and increases learners' self-esteem and confidence in their reading skills.
Throughout Term 4, the Learning Support Team has welcomed Rapha (a cavapoo) and Miso (a golden retriever) to school each week along with their fantastic humans where learners from Year 2 have had the opportunity to read to the dogs. Reading in the presence of a non-threatening and non-judgmental dog can help to create a safe and conducive environment for learning, and our learners have loved every minute of it.
Y5 Space MADD Celebration
Wow what an amazing celebration our Space MADD evening was. Thank you to all of our families for joining us.
This visual timeline of Space through the decades and beyond, connected the audience to our unit of inquiry, 'Exploration expands human understanding'. Creating communities outside of planet Earth is not just a dream, but certainly a reality.
In Music lessons, Year 5 learnt new songs that reflected our Space context and connected to a time in the Space Race. Our pod has been filled with beautiful singing, as we have practiced and added the finishing touches with choreography too. This all came together on the night, as our learners performed with so much confidence. Thank you to Ms Tash and Mr Kevin for your positive support and expert teaching. This is always much appreciated.
Learners displayed agency in all stages of our movie production. They chose their focus 'time' or 'event' in space to inquire into and collaborated with their peers and teachers. Throughout this unit of inquiry it was wonderful to observe learners grow in different ways. They quickly became experts at using microphones, editing CapCut, adding special effects, using apps to improve photo quality, recording a voice over again and again... Our pod was alive with sharing, feedback, discussions and celebrations.
Well done Year 5, on your perseverance and willingness to reflect and improve many times. We all felt so proud watching the final movie, as this showcased the journey you have all been on this term. What a wonderful way to finish our year together. Congratulations.
Primary Transition
Last week all primary learners had the opportunity to spend some time in next year's learning spaces.
Learners went to the new spaces to get a little taste of what next year will feel like. The purpose of this time was to help ease the transition of learners from one year level to another or from primary school to secondary school. The learners had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with their new spaces and ask any questions they had.
Here are a few pictures of our transition activities.

Thank you for making this exhibition a memorable success.
Year 6 Moving Forwards Celebration
We are delighted to share the wonderful success of the Year 6 Moving Forwards Celebration held on Thursday, 15th June. It was an fantastic event that marked the culmination of a year filled with growth, learning, and memories. We want to extend our heartfelt congratulations to all our Year 6 students for their achievements.
Year 6 Secondary Transition Days
We are excited to share the highlights of the recent visit by our Year 6 learners to our secondary school. Last Thursday and Friday, they embarked on a secret spying mission, exploring the new areas they will soon be using and getting to know our friendly Year 7 tutors and specialist teachers. This special visit offered a sneak peek into secondary school life and allowed them to experience a taste of the different subjects that make up the MYP curriculum.
Our young adventurers donned lab coats and became scientists in our Megalab, embracing exciting experiments. They put their design and engineering skills to the test in a thrilling race car Design challenge. Solving a 'whodunit?' mystery in Individuals & Societies showcased their critical thinking abilities and from Maths problem-solving to team-building challenges in PHE, they demonstrated their resilience and open mindedness. Their creativity as communicators was showcased in English as learners explored 'characterisation' and created their own superheroes!
In addition to these engaging activities, our Year 6 learners were treated to captivating performances from our Music & Drama departments. Our current Year 7 students dazzled them with their award-winning song "Under the Sea" from the Sing Up! Contest. They also showcased their talent by performing a powerful scene from the Greek tragedy Antigone.
Year 6 learners thoroughly enjoyed interacting with our knowledgeable Middle Years learners during the "Meet the Secondary Experts" peer support session. Their remarkable independence was evident as they navigated their way from lesson to lesson, relishing the highlight of the day—the lifts! They also enthusiastically joined our secondary assembly.
It was a fantastic opportunity for our Year 6 learners to immerse themselves in the new world of secondary, and they handled the experience with confidence, enthusiasm and with great big smiles! We look forward to welcoming them as our future Year 7 learners, and we are excited about the wonderful journey ahead.

What a way to end Year 9!
It was absolutely glorious to see our Year 9 learners bringing their final Community Project to fruition in Term 4. Learners had worked with charities or organisations to take action in one of the four following ways.
Direct Service is action that happens in the presence of the persons, animals, or places we want to impact. This may include volunteering or cleaning up a park.
Indirect Service may not be in the presence of the person or thing you are impacting. Service might take the form of fundraising or collections.
Advocacy is when you speak up for or against an issue or solution. When we use our voices, we are being advocates.
Research involves finding out new information that informs or demands action. For example, collecting scientific data or surveying a group.
Our Year 8 learners became peer markers for the afternoon and helped to grade a section of the Year 9 projects; a great way for the Year 8 learners to get inspired for their projects next year!
Thank you to our Nexus Community who responded to requests for donated toys, books, clothes and food.
Year 8 National Museum Gallery Walk
Year 8's have been investigating personal and cultural expression in our unit entitled Distinctive World. Learners sought to reflect upon how identities and ways of life can be shaped by different resources and interactions between world cultures.
Following a visit to the Singapore National Museum earlier this month, learners have investigated their own research question on a culture of influence on Singapore, namely Malay, Indian, Chinese, Peranakan and Eurasian. As a team, they then collaborated to curate a museum experience, including a museum purpose, mission, vision and floorplan which they presented to parents, guardians and teachers, who were invited to walk and engage with our Year 8 Gallery walk on Wednesday.
Our audience could learn about the development of Singlish and tasty treats such as Hokkien Mee and Curry puffs through carefully selected artefacts, as well as the origins of Peranakan tiles and Indian dress all being exposed in the Atrium. Congratulations on a fantastic gallery walk, Year 8 and thank you to the parents who came to support!
