Resilience and Sustainability

School libraries and campus librarians have responded to the COVID-19 crisis with remarkable strength.

In the coming school year, campus librarians are preparing both (1) to offer library instruction in blended and remote environments and (2) to provide library services under still undetermined conditions.

These two problems of practice will provide the focus for CLN this year. Together, we will use both resilience and sustainability to support our students and grow our library programs.

Continuous Improvement of Library Instruction

As stated in the introduction to the Empire State Information Fluency Continuum, "Inquiry is a fundamental building block of teaching and learning that empowers students to follow their sense of wonder into new discoveries and insights about the way the world works."

Learner independence, grounded in learner inquiry, is vital in every school day; remote and blended learning increases demands on these learner skills.

Working this year in small professional learning communities, campus librarians will explore and extend their use of library instruction to support learner inquiry skills.

School Libraries during Remote and Blended Learning

The Campus Librarian Network will continue to support school librarians working during the COVID-19 pandemic. In Spring 2020, this entailed shifting our workshops to weekly, online meetings addressing topics as they arose after NYC schools were closed.

In SY2020-21, workshops will continue to meet online, and topics will be selected from the NYCSLS Translation of Practice for School Librarians.

CLN Professional Practice Workshops will be offered every three weeks.
