SKILLS - Behaviors
Students will be able to:
• Learn the routines and expectations of reading time • Work cooperatively with partners to think and talk about books
• Choose appropriate books for independent reading • Identify and use strategies for reading just-right books
• Make quick and quiet transitions from whole class instruction to independent reading • Keep track of their independent reading, both in school and at home
• Make plans and set goals for independent reading, both in school and at home
SKILLS -Comprehension
Students will be able to:
• Monitor for meaning • Begin to make meaningful connections to text
• Use context clues to make meaning of difficult vocabulary and concepts
- Compare two characters, settings or events using details from the text
- Re-read a text with intention
- Respond to reading using evidence from the text
SKILLS – Listening and Speaking
Lessons will help students be able to listen attentively to books read aloud, participate in group discussions, take turns in conversation when discussing books with a partner or a group, respond appropriately during book conversations and discuss independent reading plans with a partner.
