Under the lights of Wachusett mountain night skiing, ski club has been a major success. With participation from all three grades, a total of 130 kids participated. Ski Club is a 6 week after school program. Every Thursday starting on January 2nd Brown Middle School students were available to enjoy all 8 lifts, 25 trails, 9 different restaurant/treat options, and fun bus rides. Ski club is a great way to spend time with friends and practice your skiing skills.
After hearing from students and staff it is clear that the general favorite thing about the club is the independence. Lee Franklin, an 8th grade member of the ski club claims that, “Brown does a great job giving all of the kids their own independence so that they have the freedom to do whatever they want. While making sure that everyone is safe and accounted for.” Additionally, Mr. Matthews claims that out of all the food options, the chicken tenders are the clear winner. Though, the student favorite is the Waffle Cabin. An anonymous club member said, “Smelling the sweet warm smell of the waffles makes me smile every time and I just have to get one.” Besides that, this year we got a lot of snow which provided great conditions for skiing which only added to the experience.
Led by Mr. Eisen, photography club captures the essence of things unseen by many. It is a chance for students who are passionate about photography to display their talent, or learn more about the topic. For many, the club allows students to pursue a passion that otherwise they haven’t been able to do. Being in a photography club is a fun after school activity, but it is also a great chance for students to learn more about photography. Of course, like all of Brown's after school activities, it is welcome to every student, and it is highly encouraged to join!
Pride club, now led by the librarian Ms. QM is a part of brown that little is known about. Pride club, located in the library on the first floor of Brown, is a safe place for allies and queer people alike. Started By Mr. Allsbrook and Mr. Mcgraw. Pride club is a welcoming group that meets every Thursday from 3 to 4. People say it's “ very welcoming “ and “chill.”
In pride club, you can: read, do homework, draw, do puzzles, talk, ect.. Not to mention, at the end of the year in June (Pride month!) a food and games party happens. But only people who are regulars at pride club are allowed to attend.
I first got involved with pride club in 6th grade when I first came out, it was hard being one of the few transgender and gay kids in the grade. I faced bullying and stereotypes. But when I found out about the pride club, I quickly got involved, going to meetings and meeting many new people. I found my true self in the process.
I also found that the “mission” of pride clubs is to make people feel safe and like they belong in the world, even if their gender or sexual orientation is different from others.
Pride club is a safe place, and I hope this article encourages people to go and join.
Dnd club meets every Friday in Mr. Demarest's room. They split up into small groups led by one game master. Dungeons and Dragons is a “a chaotic board game” -Tyler. His other peers add that DND includes role play, imagination and has a fantasy aspect. We asked many students about why they like playing, here's what they said.
Why do you like playing DND?:
Emma Liu: Emma loves meeting new people and having a lot of fun playing the game.
Charlotte Barry: Charlotte says they love playing DND because they can do crazy things without being judged.
Kenshin: Kenshin loves playing because he feels like he can be someone else and live a life that’s not boring.
Izzy: Izzy likes that there is creative freedom and that the game can become anything the player wants it to be.
What was your favorite character you played so far?:
Alon: Alon's favorite character was a barbarian called Ketchup face.
Cam: Cam’s favorite character was a sourcerer named Rhogr.
D&D is a very creative game! You can create your own adventures with all your friends. You let your creativity and imagination guide you through. We heard of a lot of super creative characters and adventures.
How did you get introduced to D&D?:
Max: Max says his friend named Noman introduced him to the game.
Emma Liu: She overheard her teacher Mr. Demarest talking about it and that sparked her interest so she wanted to try it out!
What is your Favorite thing about Magic the Gathering?
Jonah: “It requires strategy.”
Quil: “It has cards.”
Tyler: “It has to due with luck but still has a ton of strategy involved.”
Leo: “The deck building.”
How Does Magic the Gathering Work?
Toby: “To play magic the gathering you play cards. You play land and when you tap them you play spells. And they can also be creatures that can attack or defend, or they could be spells that can destroy other creatures, or they can help you. Because you have 40 heart and 40 health and you want to do whatever you can to keep your hearts and health and destroy the other opponents. So, each turn you draw a card and play a land, or if you don’t have a land I guess you can’t play one but thats it.”
Each player plays with their own deck. In the club they were playing the commander version where you have one card which is your commander.

This club takes place in room 210 with Ms. Slocum and Jared Mi, a student at South who also runs Oak Hills math counts. Recently, Math Counts had a tournament where they could qualify for Nationals, but unfortunately, they just missed the rank they needed to qualify. Though members continue to have fun and say it's a great way to meet people and make friends.
The students who competed in the school round of the competition are John Moon, Harold Wang, Arjun Chowdhury, Keaton Zhang, Benjamin Park, Daniel Park, Audrey Wang, Ivy Liu, Elaine Wu, Jessica Zhang, Allora Chaudhari, Brian Chen, and Lucas Hu. In addition, they also have students Greyson Navarro, Natan Shapira, and Nasko Viola.
Math Team
Keaton talked about his favorite part of being on the math team, meeting new people, making friends, and getting extra practice in a subject he loves. When asked if getting perfect scores had affected his mindset, he stayed focused, saying he was just excited to keep competing and representing his school. He had a lot of enthusiasm about his upcoming competitions.
John shared that his favorite part of the Math Team was meeting new people and getting extra practice. When asked about practice, he described it as a mix of chatting with friends and learning different problem-solving strategies from teammates. As a veteran on the team, John reflected on his past three years, saying the best part was the friendships he made. He also enjoyed the sense of unity that came from competing as a school against four other schools.
