Writing From the Heart by Charlotte Klingaman (7th grade)
I stare straight ahead
Dreading the inevitable
But knowing there’s no stopping it.
But that’s when my memory cuts out
The internal pain of panic
Because across` the seat
My sister holds my hand
My shaking hand as we travel
Being held by my sister
Who’s scared herself
Because we are traveling to the clinic
Getting ready for our flu shots.
And with every block we pass
My heartbeat nearly stops
But being held by someone I love
Even in such a small way
Makes my heart grow wings
And want to fly away,
Travel to a far away place.
A small moment, tucked into a pocket of time,
That still holds fast
With every vrooom of the car, my heartbeat slows,
But when she held my hand,
It was like i’d been plunged underwater
The car didn’t stop moving
Nor did time
But I gathered some strength
My sister’s eyes still were panicked,
And I was still jumpy.
But I felt so happy
Knowing that this was an emotion
I could share
With somebody.
Starry Flight by Alexis Sam (6th Grade)
One planet, Two worlds by Chimdi Anyanwu (8th grade)
Life for others is easy.
Life for me is uneasy.
I'm from the planet called earth,
The place I was given birth.
Im from a country called Nigeria,
And the other called America.
I come for the country that lives in poverty and peril.
Also from a country where the government is strict and very federal.
I come from a country where when they dont get their leader they
turn riots into wars.
I also come from a country that when democrats fall republicans rise.
I come from a country where government steals money from people.
Another where racism is legal.
When the time comes I have to decide. Whether to stay or go
I'm still deciding I don't know.
Would I want to go to a country with a poor economy
Or a country with racism difficulty.
A country where i have more family
Or a country were I have more friends.
Everytime I go to Nigeria I don't want to leave.
But when I come back boredom I receive.
Having 2 worlds is really bugging
Even if both countries are struggling
It might not feel right
Like you want to wake up and fight.
Trust me though you'll get used to it
So just find a seat and sit.
