635 Marine Biology ACP 12 full year 12 credits
Prerequisite: Completion of the NPS physical science and biological science graduation requirements
or department head approval.
This course is a unique opportunity to integrate knowledge acquired from the three core science courses (physics, chemistry, and biology) and apply it to the last frontier of exploration: the oceans. The course emphasizes marine biology and ecology. It also includes physical oceanography topics such as tides, plate tectonics, and the properties of seawater, and how they influence the distribution and adaptations of marine life. Human impact on the marine environment is examined through issues such as climate change, plastic pollution, and the fishing industry. Hands on laboratory investigations, art projects, and field trips help to reinforce and illustrate key concepts covered in the course.
