961 Engineering Capstone Honors H 11, 12 Full Year 12 credits
Prerequisite: Teacher recommendation. This course was formerly titled Engineering 3 H.
Students who complete this course will learn the engineering methods and skills involved in the production of consumer grade goods. The students will build upon and increase their knowledge of Physics, Chemistry, Electrical, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering to design various projects throughout the year. They will be working as members of cooperating engineering teams to design, engineer, and produce products that could be mass manufactured. The students will learn engineering design techniques such as the Axiomatic Design Process, methods of mass production, and safe handling of production equipment, i.e.,: lathe, mill, CNC equipment, robotics, vacuum forming, and injection molding. A large portion of this class will also focus on the methods of project management.
This class is a project demonstration course that the students are able to apply all the skills they learned in Science and Engineering to a real world engineering design solution. The students collaborated in teams both remotely and in school to develop the solutions to the problems they themselves agreed upon. The students learned about and how to apply the Axiomatic Design process to help them with a viable design solution.
Current Projects
Even though most of the year was remote the class is currently building prototypes for two problems.
“Porch Pirates” Using Mark Rober, former NASA engineer turned YouTuber, as an inspiration for the problem of stolen packages. The team decided to develop a better solution to the problem of stolen packages. (although not as entertaining) The team design, developed, and is currently building a prototype for a security package delivery box. The box will allow access to only the delivery people and the homeowner. This box will also notify the package recipient of the delivery.
_______________________________________________________________
Automated Pet Door. The problem this group decided to solve is a method of allowing a pet two way access to the outdoors. The door must secure itself from unwanted intruders and animals. The other constraint the door much account for is restricting access of the pet to specific times of the day..
