Students made paper-and-basswood gliders from a Delta Dart glider kit. They tried to get the maximum possible flight time out of their gliders, by launching them correctly and by attaching control surfaces (ailerons and elevators). (Vlad Bondarenco's flight video is on the right.)
At the same time, students learned about how gliders and planes are able to fly, and in particular, about the functions of the different control surfaces: main wing, stabilizer, rudder, ailerons and elevators. ('How do airplanes fly?' assignment (PDF))
