March: Students play the Fraction Cookie Game which has them using geometric shapes to make fraction equivalents and equations.
January: In Unit 4, students develop their ability to use measurement tools to measure objects. They learn that perimeter is the distance around a 2-dimensional figure and measure the perimeter of various 2-D shapes.
Students also identify the amount of space a given object covers as its area, and develop an understanding that area is measured in square units. They discuss rectangles that have the same area and different perimeters, and the same perimeter and different areas.
December: In this unit (Unit 3), students refine their addition and subtraction strategies, by solving different kinds of problems. They also work on place value of 3 digits numbers and size and value of the number 1000. See examples of this work here.
November: The third graders are in the data unit - Unit 2. Students collect, organize, represent and describe categorical data. They will work with bar graphs, pictographs, and line plots in this unit.
