January: In Unit 4, students begin to learn about measurement and later in the unit, fractions. Throughout this unit, students are learning to use consistent units to measure accurately and to understand the underlying mathematics of measuring. This kind of experience will improve their sense of what measuring is all about. Their work with fractions begins to lay the foundation for work in later grades.
A first grader in Ms. Fitch's Class uses string to measure a small picture.
A student in Ms. Espinal's class measures the length of a book binding.
Ms. Espinal emphasizes the the importance of accuracy when measuring.
December: In Unit 3, we work on developing strategies for adding and subtracting numbers by counting on or back, solving problems that involve adding more than two numbers, and finding many different combinations for the same number. We will also begin to work with tens and ones as we represent the teen numbers as a group of ten plus a group of ones. Throughout this unit, we will be thinking about how to use equations to record our work. We will also be counting larger quantities and reading and writing larger numbers.
