*Take Notice: Order of units & unit length might vary from class to class, depending on individual classroom needs.
This unit provides students with a series of experiments that helps them understand that particles too small to see can have weight, take up space, and can help us understand the water transformation such as evaporation. In Section 1, “Water, A Liquid,” students are introduced to the mystery of a disappearing sea and the scale at which evaporation can occur. They build their own mini-lakes, and review concepts of weight, volume, and heaviness for size (the term we use in place of density). In Section 2, "Water to Vapor," students consider what happens to water when it evaporates; does evaporation destroy water, or does water continue to exist after it evaporates?
Students will be introduced to ecosystems and food chain/web relationships in an ecosystem. The unit is designed to focus student's attention on the interactions within a New England Pond. Additionally, there is an emphasis on the use of microscopes and drawing from observation.
Through a series of hands-on investigations, students will experience the effects of magnetism and learn about static and current electricity. The electricity unit is presented to students through a series of investigations, experiments, active learning experiences, and questions.
This unit corresponds with the "Techsploration: Electricity Show"
This unit provides students with an opportunity to develop dissection skills while learning about owls, bone identification, skeletal structure, food chains and adaptations of owls. Students will dissect a pellet and pull out as many bones as possible. If they are lucky, they may have enough bones to put together a whole animal skeleton! The owl pellets are real, but have been sanitized so they are safe to dissect. Students will have a choice to wear rubbers gloves and a mask while dissecting.
This unit corresponds with the "Birds of Prey" presentation.
You know its the end of the year when its time for Tissue Box Go-Karts! Information to be provided at end of year!
