Scholarships & Grants

Many study-abroad scholarships are available through various external organizations. It is worthwhile researching and applying for scholarships on your own. Some scholarships opportunities are listed below, but there are many other options.

American Councils for International Education: American Councils administers a variety of cultural exchange, study abroad, and research programs on behalf of both public and private funders. Participation in these programs is through an open, merit-based competition, and facilitates mutual understanding between the United States and Eurasia, Southeast Europe, and South Asia.

Boren Fellowship: Boren Fellowships provide up to $30,000 to U.S. graduate students to add an important international and language component to their graduate education through specialization in area study, language study, or increased language proficiency. Boren Fellowships support study and research in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East.

Critical Language Scholarship Program: The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program offers fully-funded summer language institutes for U.S. university students and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State.

Foundation Center, NYC: The foundation center’s search engines can be accessed for free in the New York City-based office.

Institute of International Education Study Abroad Funding: This directory features detailed descriptions of hundreds of study abroad scholarships, fellowships, grants, and paid internships for U.S. undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students, and professionals.

International Scholarships: The International Scholarship Search is a resource for students wishing to study abroad. At this site, you will find a comprehensive listing of grants, scholarships, loan programs, and other information to assist college and university students in their pursuit to study abroad.

  • Details: Searches can be done using the area of study, location, and based on where you are from.

New School External Scholarships: This site, created by the New School, offers a listing of scholarship opportunities. A specific section is dedicated for graduate students.

Rotary International Ambassadorial Scholarships: The scholarships sponsor undergraduate and graduate students, as well as qualified professionals pursuing vocational studies. While abroad, scholars serve as goodwill ambassadors to the country where they study and give presentations about their own culture to Rotary clubs and other groups. Back home, scholars share with Rotarians and others the experiences that deepened their understanding of another culture.

GotChosen: Apply for the scholarships amounting between $1,000-$10,000 page by creating a post in a channel that interests you. Then, get everyone you know to vote for it. The post with the most votes by the end of the month wins.
