Health & Travel Insurance

Students are responsible for having international health insurance coverage.
Travel insurance is not required, but is highly recommended for property.

International Health Insurance

The New School’s health insurance (UnitedHealthcare) covers international travel to all 2023 IFP sites except Cuba. For individuals participating in the Cuba IFP we make arrangements with our partner organization to secure the necessary health insurance for in country coverage. Note that students are responsible for covering the cost of Cuban health insurance.

For non-New School students or students that do not have New School health insurance, please check with your healthcare provider about international coverage. Many health insurance plans will only cover you in the event of an emergency. The New School strongly recommends that students with inadequate health coverage consider purchasing an international health insurance plan in the event of an accident or illness while abroad.

Please see the Study Abroad Office’s document on purchasing international health insurance for more details.

Travel Insurance

Personal property insurance plans typically cover items such as laptops, cell phones, clothing and may even provide protection against ATM robberies and identity theft. For IFP participants looking to secure travel property insurance, we encourage you to do your own research to determine which insurance package best suits your needs.

We suggest that students check with their own or their parents' homeowners or renters insurance plans first to find out if personal property insurance can be added to an existing policy. Additionally, some of the travel insurance companies listed below include travel health insurance in their packages. Some companies offer discounted rates for students. For a broad overview, it’s worth a look at InsureMyTrip.com, a travel insurance site that provides a side-by-side comparison of some—but not all—plans.
